hi all,
Does anyone on the board have a high output alternator and smart regulator? If so, do you experience engine surging after starting with the batteries fully charged?
My setup is a Balmar 70amp alternator and a Balmar Max Charge regulator. I understand what's going on with fully charged batteries and the tach bouncing, but it actually makes the engine surge at low rpms.
Anybody else have this?
Thanks!

I get tachometer surge but Engine rpms remain steady. Turn on blower for a few minutes to pull current and tach surge will disappear.

I have a max charge and 90 Amp. No surging tach. Do you have it programmed to support a tach (default is no). This ensures the field will get a minimal field voltage to preserve tach signal. Let me know which Max Charge you have and I’ll dig up the instructions.

As I recall, mine did the same thing. No longer have the boat. I chalked it up to the start-up charge algorithm trying to go to bulk, sensing immediate voltage rise, ramping down, and then trying again. In theory, this would go on through the bulk and absorption timers, about an hour, until you reached float levels at which time the field current might be so low that this is unnoticeable. Seemed the frequency was about once every few seconds. Only noticeable at idle under no-load conditions. That's my theory......
