Gearbox engagement

G'day all,

I have recently found that there is an issue when I engage forward gear.
There is no problem with reverse: there is a definite "clunk" as it engages straight away.

However when the lever is moved forward there is no definite engagement, just a delay before it decides to rotate the prop; quite disconcerting sometimes!

I have checked the linkages and all seems ok in terms of movement both forward and reverse.  What am I missing, could it be an issue in. the gearbox itself.
Any ideas gratefully received.

cheers

Kerry-
Sounds like your transmission cable needs adjustment. I would search this website for the specs. Somewhere, there's a diagram with dimensions to ensure proper clutch plate engagement.  I think there was a notice sent out by Hurth. You also may want to check your fluid to see if it's discolored or smells like a burning car brake which would confirm slippage.

Kerry,

My gearbox operates with the same characteristics as you described.  The cable travel was limited by the gear shift lever in the cockpit so I shorter the length of the cable to allow for more travel.

Checking while at the dock by using the lever on the gearbox itself it does always engages, just not as noisily as reverse.

I have learned to live with it. The other path is to remove the transmission and either rebuild it or replace it.

Interesting in that my hull number is 2123. I purchased brand new when we lived in Upstate New York. I had the same problem with my gear box.  It was the a adjustment of the gear box that was off. Unfortunately I just dealt with it and with less than 500 hours the gear box gave it up. I had to put a new tranny in.
