Just wanted to pass a little bit of information along to anyone considering going the Garmin route. I recently added the new 741 chartplotter, with the 18HD radar, nmea 2000 net, wireless wind vane, and depth/speed/temp transducer. The reason I went with garmin was because from all their literature it seemed like it was well integrated with Apple i-devices. The plotter itself works well with other garmin components, but I have yet to get it to do anything with my ipad/iphone other than skip to the next music track and adjust volume. So, I have update the software on it, because it doesn't work at all with the iphone garmin helm app.
The largest problem I have is, Garmin doesn't provide any way to download software updates for the stuff on a Mac. You have to have a Windows machine with an sd card slot to be able to update the equipment. I have like 15 Macs and ditched windows around 2002 because it's basically useless (in my opinion...) Last weekend, I gave up trying to get virtualbox with windows on my mac to work with the SD card, and bought a cheap windows laptop so I could upgrade my garmin gear whenever I want to. So... If you're not a Windows person, then you have been warned. You will need a windows box if you don't have one, so if you're going the garmin route, add that to your pricing. Garmin will sell you an SD card for $30, but who wants to pay for something that's free to download to fix bugs in THEIR software? It doesn't add anything new as far as i know, it just makes it work... I already paid for something that's supposed to work, so basically, that's just bad customer service. IMHO they should mail them to me for free upon request given the amount of money I've spent on their gear. I'm pretty disappointed by this, since updating should be much simpler given that the chartplotter has wifi, bluetooth, usb and nmea2000. Kind of a brain-dead hurried design imho... So... if i could do it again - I'd probably look more closely at their competition.

Thanks, that makes it easy to scratch Garmin off the list. Now the choice is E127 or E95. :)
I would love to go B&G Zeus2 but I have never seen one and changing my whole system based on an internet video, B&G's website and virtually no reviews is not going to happen.

FWIW I have had no issues with my Garmin system. I have a Garmin GPSMAP 820 and the Garmin NMEA 2000 network with their speed, depth.temp transducer and wind vane. I have the Garmin GHP12 below deck autopilot installed. I also have an Off Shore Systems UK fuel level sensor and holding tank level sensor connected to the system. I can use the Garmin Helm app on my Ipad to control the chartplotter if I am down below and use Garmin Blue Chart app on my Ipad to route plan and upload it wirelessly to the 820. I can also use the Ipad to engage the autopilot through the chart plotter, So far I have not had any problems with that package. I do not have the Garmin Meteor 300 entertainment module that is required in order to control your Ipad/Ipod from the chartplotter so I can't speak to that function. Although you didn't mention that you had the Meteor 300 system either.
You are right about not being able to directly prepare a software update SD card on a Mac. However, I have Parallels desktop on my Mac Book Pro which creates a virtual Windows machine where I run Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and have no problem using that on my Mac to prepare the SD card for software updates.

Just a follow up - Again, as far as usability/functionality, I'm happy with the garmin. I have yet to figure out how to get it working with my old raymarine st4000+ wheel pilot, but otherwise, it's working. I did get my firmware updated, finally, after using a PC. On the Mac, I was unable to use virtualbox, but didn't try parallels since I no longer own a copy of that software. I have sent several requests to Garmin to add support for this, and wonder why they don't just distribute SD card images in .dmg format for Mac users. So that's why I am frustrated with them... But, like their land/car units, I've been dealing with the same issues with Garmin for years. They make great map hardware/devices, but their software updates have always been a pain, for no good technical reason. (I make a living running computers as a Unix/Linux systems administrator and developer, for 30 years now. It takes a lot to tick me off, and I really hope Garmin is paying attention to these forums.)
