Fixing original hand bilge pump

My 1984 Mk I boat has the original hand bilge pump. In the last number of years it has been harder and harder to get the pump to self prime and actually pump. This year it is as though the bellows of the pump had ruptured. THe hand lever goes up and down with no resistance and no water is ejected from the transom.  I climbed into the locker under the port side cockpit seat and detached the bellows which has no tears or breaks. It is a Whale Gusher Mk3.  Are there check valves that I am unable to see since the pump is buried in the rear end of that shallow enclosure?  Do I have to completely remove the whole pump the get at the required replacement parts?

Chuck,
Here is a link on the Whale pump

looking at these pictures there is an in and out flap which may have deteriorated on you or there may be some interference. Funny mine is 24 years old and I keep thinking to take it apart, just to clean it if for no other reason.
