The original insulation on my exhaust elbow is cracked and blowing dust in the engine compartment so I have to replace it. Anyone have any idea what type of insulation will do the job.?
The old stuff seems to be a layer of cloth fiberglass matting, cloth fiberglass tape and then a wrap of matting between two layers of an aluminum tape but I can't find anyone who uses this type of arrangement. Hansen Marine in Marblehead simply uses a fiberglass tape but I'm concerned that will allow too much heat into the engine compartment.

Here's some good resources for your options. I went the black pipe with titanium wrap from Napa, and it's been completely solid so far.

I utilized wraps of Glass tape sandwiching some non-paper backed home insulation on the elbow of our C- 30 and it did fine....cool to the touch. You might be able to find some heavy aluminum foil as a final wrap to reflect the heat, but I don't think its necessary....or a sufficient thickness of glass tape by itself should be ok. Hansen is a knowledgeable Marine Engine dealer.

The jacket from Catalina Direct works very nice.
