Coolant Hose Kit -- M-35B

Has anybody bought this hose kit (Universal #200621)?

I need to replace the hoses that run from the manifold to the HX, and from the HX back to the engine (the two HX hoses containing coolant). I pulled them off today (along with the HX) and discovered that they are not standard hoses (they each have a wire in them).

Wondering:

1) are the hoses in the kit pre-formed / molded (e.g., the right-angle bend in the hose from front of engine to HX)?

2) Are they really any different, other than the metal coil, from what I can buy at a chandlery? What's the advantage of the metal coil?

3) Has anybody uses non-OEM hoses for coolant to/from the HX? Thoughts on this?

I have used wire reinforced hose from West Marine to replace most of the hoses for my cooling system with no problems. Only very tight bends are a trick as even the wire hose will tend to kink when the bend radius is too small. For those you have a couple of options. I have used preformed radiator hose from a local auto parts store. Bring the old hose and peruse the stock and pick one that comes closest, and cut off the extra. Another option that works well is to replace the bend portion with a standard copper plumbing elbow.

I've bought hoses from my local Universal dealer and they do come pre-bent. My dealer is in Mass but if you go to their site you can find one on the left coast I'm sure.

I'm not being critical of what others do, but I find it works best to use dealer parts.. in particular fan belts.

I bought my hoses from the Universal dealer as well, but he sold me lengths of Shieldsflex wire reinforced hoses at about 1/3 of the cost of the Universal parts, I just cut it to the required length. On the M35A you don't need pre-formed hoses except for one spot and there is a 90 degree metal adapter already there. At least on our engine there is, YMMV.

Chuck, the Universal fan belts are Dayco TopCog and you can get them from a car parts store for half what Universal charges. I just bought 3 this spring for $14 Cdn each vs $35 Cdn. I had 300 plus hours on the one on there, still working fine and looks like new but thought since it's been in there 4 years I might retire it to stand by duty.

Bud... I used to use belts from Napa but found they were slightly off-size and I always got a lot of fan dust in the engine compartment. I'll look for what you suggested.

Thanks.
