Boot and Hull Striping - Time for a Color Change

The Admiral is not fond of the ~25 year old faded original light blue boot and hull stripes on our C36 Mk I.  It appears the two lower boot stripes were colored in the gelcoat process and perhaps the upper strip a few inches below the rub rail was vinyl.  Not sure, as all three are equally faded.  What is the best way to update with new colors?  Most likely dark blue and grey striping.  Do folks apply a vinyl tape over the original strips?  If so, how about the boot strap that gets 2-3 times wider as it wraps around the transom?  Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks.

I am also thinking of renewing the blue lines on Veritas this Spring. All lines are gelcoat so I would do a moderate sanding and applying a couple to three coats of dark blue yacht enamel. This worked well on my previous boat. If you have vinyl tape, I would recommend the old tape be removed.  When I bought Veritas, I removed the former port-of-call vinyl lettering with a scraper/putty knife and heat gun on low setting. Then used acetone to clean up residual glue. This should work on vinyl tape.

The lines under the toe rail are vinyl .. I replaced some of mine and got it from Catalina. Guess they have it inn different colors. The boot stripe is in the gel and you'd have to paint but once you do that you'll be painting and repairing in the future.

On my boat both the boot stripe and the stripe just under the rubrail are gelcoat not vinyl tape. I am inclined to believe most of the MKl's would be gelcoat and the MKll's would have some vinyl tape, but I am not sure. I had a Catalina 30 1984 which was new when I bought it. 18 years later I sold it and the new owner renewed the stripes with 1000 grit wet paper, rubbing compound, & polish. Turned out exceptionally well.
