Battery amps

Anyone an electrical engineer or savy person to answer a question. If I put two 6 volt 215 Ah batteries in series, I get 12 volts. What is the Ah rating, still 215 or totaled to 430?
Winter projects, nothing like them...

Don't need to be an electrical engineer for this one:
If you put them in series, you end up with 12V and 215AH (that's the same set-up we have). If you put them in parallel, you'd have 6V and 430 AH....

So then you put in 4 X 6 volts in series parallel and you get 12V and 430 amps. That's a pretty standard 6 volt set up and is a good setup for battery longevity and cost.

Just fitting all 4 that gets tough. Ive looked through many of the approaches, looks like cut out the shelf in the battery area aft of the card table.
Anyone ever gotten under the Nav station seat?

Gary,
4 6V batteries will fit under the aft seat of the starboard table. Your 1987 is the same as mine. Where the board (removable sits on a lip) you will have to notch out that lip just the width of the battery to get the last one in. Another benefit is the batteries will balance the boat out. They wheigh approximate 64# each and I had a slight list to port which they helped remove. Somewhere in the archives of this section I believe I shared a picture of the notch with the batteries in place. Because this is where the original 2 batteries were I lost no storage space. The 430 amps is a lot to keep the house going. I set my link monitor to 215 amps so the gauge works its way from the top to the halfway mark. Only in the fall after the boat is on the hard have I experienced the orange warning light.

Gary,

Are you running a refrigerator with this set up? I have 4 x 6V, but the previous owner put 2 batteries in the seat forward of the card table and ran very large gauge cables from one seat to the other to affect the parallel wiring. I don't care for this set up because of distance, but it seems to work so far. Very tough to get the batteries in and out of that area as well as keeping them level. I will look for your picture to see how you got 4 batteries in the aft seat.

Yes I run the refrigeration with this setup. I am working on ways to reduce that draw, but to date it is still a project. Normal procedure during a day I like to run a minimum of one hour to keep the charge up. On an extended trip though I very seldom ever draw off more than 50-60 amps.

Jeff Berman has a Mark II and has placed (6) 6V batteries for his house bank just forward of the galley sink. Don't know if this works on a Mark I.

Your approach with the 4 6 volt batteries is the one I have been looking at in the archives. This weekend Im going to shake snow off the cover, and see if there are any other places to hide batteries and not tear up the battery boxes. As I said, there is no "free lunch" here, I'll probaly end up doing your proven design. What one does for refrigeration and a cold beer on a mooring...
