Anyone tried the speedseal for your water pump impeller?

Hi, everyone.

I was thinking about purchasing a "speed seal" (www.speedseal.com) for my water pump to (a) lower the maintenance time and (b) increase the impeller life.

Do any of you have this on your engine? What is your opinion on it?

Ben,
It's your boat and your money, but I've found that with the position of the Oberdorfer on the M25 engine, the four screws came out in less than 30 seconds. Marketing hype aside, I'm not sure how a Speedseal can increase impeller life. Rubber against bronze or rubber against SS. Can there be that much of a difference? Maybe I'm missing something. Compared to other engines I've worked on, the M25 in the C36 is a DREAM!

I just called SpeedSeal and they did not have a seal for my M25XP w/older 6-hole Sherwood type water pump. Nor did they plan on having one. Age of the motor and pump was the reason given. They did have the seal for the Oberdorfer pump though. Good luck.

Yes, I have the Oberdorfer. The main advantage I see to the speedseal is that you can quickly check the impeller without having to worry about breaking/replacing the gasket.

The rest of it sounds like sales hype, I agree.

Here's a discussion we had, Speed Seal and Oberdorfer:

Thanks for that, Stu.

When I replaced the Oberdorfer paper gasket, as per the instructions that came with it, I installed it naked (the gasket I mean, not me:), i.e. no gasket sealant).

Are we supposed to use gasket sealant?

I'm not seeing any leaks, so I'm hoping not.

No, not needed, just the paper gasket.
