1989 Alternator Upgrade

Just bought an 1989 that has the original type alternator. I've read several articles on the web about supposed upgrade units that wound up needing modifications, pulleys, shims, etc to work.I'd like to get a unit that has the regulator mounted on the back, and possibly one that is self excited. Can anyone recommend one that can replace what I got without major rewiring ?

Just place alternator in the search engine here in the upper right hand corner and it will bring up many posts.

To answer your question basically depends on what you wish to achieve by replacing your existing alternator  for a proper answer. If yours is failing and not charging just order a new one that is equivalent or have yours checked and possibly rebuilt? The 90 amp alternator from Leece Neville could be a good replacement. It comes with the internal regulator and may be less expensive than having your original rebuilt.
I have a 105 amp alternator which required purchasing a pulley, I rewired with 1-0 wire , using a Balmar external regulator, a combiner, a 12V battery for starting and a 4 6v battery Bank 460 AMPS.....so yes some rewiring was necessary.

Actually, mine is over charging, 16V, so the internal regulator is failing.

I'd say so.
