Folding prop

went on this morning. Picked up a Gori 15x11 off ebay a couple months ago and finally got to putting it on. First race this saturday, will update on the improvement, which I hope to be significant as I took a 6 point PHRF hit for it.

I put a folding one (3 blade MaxProp) on this spring and it was worth it. In our club it was only a 3 second hit on the PHRF but I think it will be 6 next year since our schedule is way off for time alotments.

Even with 6 seconds, I would think you would still be gaining a competative edge with the folding prop.

After putting it on, I realized I should have done that upgrade prior to new sails. Getting rid of the drag below seemed to be a better bang for the buck than new rags.

Good Luck!

Was it a bolt on deal or did you have to modify or replace your prop shaft?

I had considered looking into trying to find a used Maxprop for my boat but after reading about the install process decided it might not be a simple improvement.

The Max Prop took about an hour to install and that included removal of the old prop, trimming the shaft - took about 1/4 inch off - the shaft stayed in place when it was cut, and then installation of the new prop.

I am using a 15in Classic 3 Blade set at 18 Degrees with a 9.2 pitch.

If you go that route, take your time, the directions/videos online at Max Prop are very good. They also have very good support on the phone.

It helped to assemble the prop at home a few times (without grease) to become familiar with the process and settings.

The Gori folder was a plug and play replacement. Getting the old prop off was harder than my last boat, but with a puller on and a blowtorch against the key way it popped off easy enough. Gori slides on, tighten the prop nut, insert 1 set screw, mount blades, insert 4 more set screws, done.

Slightly better upwind speed across the range, but certainly in the light light (under 5 knots) breeze I had on Saturday the boat was going faster and much more able to accelerate out of tacks. The wind died right down at one point, and I was beside two J24s and a Star, and was able to easily outpace both of them in about 2 knots of breeze and traffic chop upwind, which is good and which wouldn't have happened before.

I switched from a 15x13 fixed to a 15 x 11 Gori. I think 15x12 is probably the best number. The 13" pitch was nice at cruise speed but the engine was never quite revved up. Now I am motoring at 2200 rpm and doing about 6.5-6.6 knots with the 11" pitch, and have noticeably more stopping power in reverse, so that is an improvement as well.

Glad to hear it worked out well for you. I found similar results in light air racing, in that the boat was much more competative.

We now have scored a first and second on consecutive races with the new prop on. Only need two more solid finishes and we will be in the top two for our local Thursday night series. Look out!

What model Gori fits the '84 shaft size and rotation? Thanks!

I put the 15x11 x 1" RH on my '83 boat. I would go 15 x 12 x 1 RH if I was doing it again. Should be the same for the '84.
