Winter Covers

We just bought a 2000 Cat36mkii this summer up in Lake Champlain.  The owner didn't have a winter cover and generally partially covered the cockpit with a tarp.   We are interested in purchasing a cover--the local business that had built winter covers in the area has decided to close shop.  Haven't located anyone in the local area that is making them.

Have been on the web looking at options and saw that Kinder industries makes a cover for the Cat36 and also see some folks in the area have used shipshapecanvas.com.   I know anything done remotely will likely have some fit issues.

Does anyone have experience with any of these folks and/or have recommendations on someone they have used to build a cover?  The winters here can be tough, boat is in good shape and we would like to keep her that way!

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

We own sister ship hull number 1897. Our boat came with a shorty "southern" winter two piece canvas.  We had Ship Shape in Duluth MN add 18" to go over toe rail, a transom cover and full length skirt that goes from toe rail to water line.  http://www.shipshapecanvas.com/

I have had two boom tent covers from ShipShape. One for our Catalina 30 and now for our 36 Mark ll. I highly recommend them if you're keeping the mast on. Get the Deluxe version as it offers the most protection and durability. Owner is also great to work with. If you are storing mast off then I would recommend Fairclough as I have heard they are very good. Good luck! Tom

Fairclough can also do covers for mast up -- I got an estimate from them a couple of years ago.
The basic cover would have been $2,800, the mast up option was an additional $750 and another $175 for the radar pole.
(I decided to repair our existing cover instead, which came with the boat from a previous owner).

We fabricated our frame out of EMT tubing, joined using the "Kover Klamp" system -- www.koverklampframes.com
Their site has a video with instructions.

I just ordered a cover for mine from ShipShape.  I went with the premium material, tie downs, and extra material to cover the transom scoop, about $2,800 all in. I had to take lots of measurements (they provide a measurement form).  Obviously I haven't received the cover yet so I can't comment on quality, but ShipShape has an excellent reputation for these covers.  I have always had the boat shrink-wrapped prior to this year, but the cost of it has gone up sstedily every year.  Last year they got me for $950 to shrink wrap the boat, and I swore never again.

Is your boat the MKII version? Year? I will be interested on how it fits. We have a Boom Tent cover that doesn't extend over the toe rails so we get ice/snow on the side decks. It also doesn't cover the transom. It's about at the end of its life and we would like to get a new cover next season. We do have davits, so that would add some cover complexity.

Sorry, I forgot that my boat info no longer shows up in the signature.  1993 Mk1.5.  I have the Mk1 hull, but with the aft cabin, walk-thru transom, and fixed hull ports of the Mk2.  The cover is over the rail, but it does not extend down the hull sides.  ShipShape can accommodate davits.  It's part of the measurements you have to provide.

Yes I bought my cover from them 4 years ago maybe 5 and found them a bit on the higher end on price but you get what you pay for.   They were great to work with and 5 years later the complete cover has paid for itself.   I have to go there this weekend and cover the boat, a day job but I enjoy this kind of work.
