Who do you get your boat insurance from?

We are loooking at Boat US, $430 annually, $45,000, $720 deductable, 100/300 liability with tow assitance.

Is that OK, should I continue to look? what is a good place to get insurance for a 1985 C-36?

Thanks

Hi Bob. I have had my 1991 model insured with Allstate for years. It's insured for what I paid for it ($75,000) plus coverage for boat equipment. I pay around $ 360 per year. My agent is Blaine Davis in Long Beach. I just googled his number, it's (562) 987-1090 . Good Luck,

Mike

I am also with Allstate where we have auto and flood policies.

I insure for $108K for $900 annually. It was a lot less until we had a $25K claim from a hurricane in 2004.

I insure with State Farm, which also insures everything else we own. Perhaps because of that, we get insurance on the $100k boat for less than $400 per year. Also, this puts it under the liability umbrella we have over everything.

One thing I really like about State Farm is that they don't have the geographic limits that some supposed marine policies have. If I recall correctly, the only limit in my policy is a 50 mile distance from anywhere in North America...that means Panama, all the way around to Panama (clockwise or counterclockwise, your choice). Though, if I ever decide to take High Flight to Hawaii I will have to purchase insurance especially for that trip.

I insure the dink separately (about $50 year), as it is a separately registered vessel.

Hi Larry Brandt

We morred our last C-36 (Emerald Oddysea) in Hayden bay, Portland for years, it is/was a very nice little marina.

Have not seen it in years now! Hopefully it is still as nice.

We loved sailing to ST helens, walking up to the cafe for breakfast, and many other trips along the river.

Boy river sailing is a lot differant than ocean sailing, with its close quarters, banks, currents, shipping channels, fishing, etc, you must really be on your toes.

Hey, there is a place just east of the Washougal marina where the river does and 90% turn to the right, then 90 back to the left. With the wind coming from the east and the currant also from the east, we where never able to sail around those corners, we always had to motor as the wind and currant never allowed us to get around those turns.

I am a big fan of BoatUS insurance. My boat was struck by lightening while docked in late summer of 2007. They couldn't have been better at settling the claim. They immediately appointed well-known surveyor Jack Horner to work with me on assessing the damage. They wanted an immediate short-haul to be sure there was no hull-damage. After that, they were agreeable to everything that needed fixed and ultimately paid around $22,000. My only expense was for the deductible, $1050. They even made an interim payment when I got the first bill from the marina and then made the last payment expeditiously. They paid for replacement cost and not depreciated value of equipment that was 12 years old including tv, stereo, electronics, batteries, charger and more.

The topper for me was that when I got my renewal, I still got the accident free discount.

I could not recommend a company more highly.

I have tried Allstate and got a good quote, but they want a full out of water survey, Boat US is a little more but will take the in the water and divers report.

I like your approval of Boat US.

Thanks

I also have a quote from progessive but they are liablity only.

What is your opinion of liability ony verses full coverage.

Well, if you only need to protect yourself against claims for damage you do to others, then you only need liability coverage.

That means whatever damage occurs to YOUR boat, the insurance will pay nothing. If you can afford that type of risk, good for you.

I use Boat US, never had a claim since I started in 1997 so I cannot speak to claims processing. (Glad to hear the great review)

I have looked at other providers that were a little less but they wanted a full survey/haul-out of the boat which made it more costly, I will shop it on the next boat.

In my opinion, liability only coverage would be a risk that I would not take. Full insurance is relatively cheap for the amount of coverage you can get.

Good luck.

Looks like either allstate or boatus.

They are close in price, I am looking at combining our cars and RV to see if we get more discount.

I have Boat US and pay slightly over $500 per year for a boat valued at $89,000. I presently have a major claim in; the lower shrouds on one side pulled through at the top and this put a bend in the mast. The whole issue is a bit complicated because I'd just had the shrouds replaced, but I installed them. The insurance is waiting for a report from the surveyor, and then we will see if they agree to cover it. I will let you know. Up until this time, I haven't had any claims so I couldn't say anything one way or another.

Wow! I'm trying to insure a 2000 C36 I'm buying, and BoatUS quoted $3500 per year -- a London group quoted $2k+ I live in Gulf waters, TX, so maybe that's the hurricane tax?
