through hull valve handle

I need a little help. Wetlands II is hule # 1480 and is a 1995 Mark II.

Does anyone know where I can get a handle for the marlon through hull? I was working on one, dropped the screw down a hole and then to salt the wound, lost the handle in the water.

It’s a black valve with a lever type handle. All of the through hulls seem to be the same for the galley sink, macerator, head sink and head intake.

Have you tried taking one of the others off (carefully) and going to a hardware store to try to match up? Or you could take off your macerator as you can't use in the Great Lakes.

The macerator handle was removed before I bought the boat. I wanted to have a handle on each of the valves so I need just 1 for the valve below the head sink. The handle isn't like anything that's available in a hardware store. There are a series of grooves with a male/female connection so I have to get the right handle.

Generally the best source for parts for anything is the manufacturer, especially when they're still in buisness. The Marelon valves are, I believe, represented by Forespar, but you can check easily in a West Marine catalog. Then call them.

Thanks Stu, I stopped by my local West Marine and they had nothing even close. I sent a note to Catalina but haven't heard back. I plan on calling Catalina tomorrow and will follow up with a call to WM if the Catalina call doesn't get me anywhere.

Thanks for the help.

From everything I've heard, Catalina is not good at responding to e-mails. Phone calls seem to work the best.

I found contacting them via the website was pretty slow and disappointing. Once I had a contact to work with they were fantastic! Dani was great to work with and researched my boat to ensure I received the correct sail and had it to me in less than 2 weeks which I thought was great for a sail.

Thanks to Stu for mentioning Forespar. I sent them an e-mail last night and got a response 1st thing this morning. Just need to verify size of through hull and they can fix me up. I have all the info on the boat so will have to get them the info this weekend.

Things are looking up. Thanks all for your help.

Gary, that's nice. I think you should read this before you try installing anything, and you may have to discuss this with Forespar. I am not trying to scare you, but only make you aware of an issue one of our folks brought up. He's a plumber and knew his stuff around valves.

Stu,

I read the link from the 34 group. Thanks for the heads up. I had a bit of the leaking experience. With the valves closed, there is no leaking or dripping but if you open the valve without the screw and handle on you get pleanty of water. That's the reason for my comment that I was able to close the valves.

Looking forward to getting the handles.

Thanks Stu for posting that article on the dangers of removing the handles of through hulls http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,2729.0.html. That should be required reading by all Catalina owners!!

Glenn, thanks, we can post it all, but we can't make anyone read it or do it.

That's the very frustrating, but rewarding at the same time, part of these types of communications.

Like this one we recently came up with: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,5078.0.html

There are still folks out there with old wiring harnesses and ammeters in their cockpits.

How folks who spend anywhere from $2K to $200K on a boat as a hobby who don't read the "hobby magazine" is beyond me. Takes all kinds.

I think that was a good idea you posted Stu. Thru hulls are something that should be looked at each year if your able to pull your boat out. The screw is one of the vital parts but what is more vital are the o-rings.

I am sure there are many others just as I am guilty of not maintaining them. But when it comes out in 2 weeks that will be added to my maintenance list to disassemble, clean , lube and new o-rings. I have not looked but I presume they maybe metric o-rings, not sure of what durometer they are though. As if forespar is a European company they will be.

The new Forespar handles arrived over the weekend. They were kind enough to send me two handles with extra screws for both. After further review, I think that the Forespar through hulls are a pretty decent product. I see no way for handle screw to come out or get stripped unless you remove it or you strip the screw while reinstalling it. This will take a bit of effort though.

I must say that I was impressed by the service shown by Forespar. They replaced two handle s and screws on a product that they manufactured 14 years ago. I have talked to several other Catalina owners and not one has had a problem with any through hull valves. All had the original Forespar through hulls.

I’m not saying that there aren’t any problems with them but based on my experience the valve works well and the manufacturer backed his product 14 years after the fact at no cost to me, even though I caused the problem. You just gotta like that.
