Rocna 20kg anchor

At the boat show going on right now in Seattle, Fisheries Supply is offering a boat show deal on a Rocna 20kg (that's 44.1 lbs) at $429. Might be a good deal IF the anchor fits in the C36 MkII stock bow roller. Does anyone have this anchor? How does it rest in the bow roller? Any photos to share?

(More boat show lust...still chewing over the new dink issue per the other thread.)

Larry, if no one has one, I suggest you try the Rocna website. IIRC they have good dimensioned drawings for you to start with. I "only" have a Rocna 10 (long story discussed in my Anchor Sizing Table topic on the C34 board) and we also "only" have a Mark I "toy" bow roller (I became convinced that the additional lever arm for a longer roller wasn't worth it to me). It sets just fine on the roller but the tip of the anchor does hit the gelcoat but you shouldn't have that issue on a newer bow roller. It does require a "leash" to keep it from going overboard, cause the shank has a slight hump in it. Even many of the more traditional anchors I see on boats our size have them, so don't depend only on the roller - use a captive pin or a leash - I put a rail mount cleat on the pulpit.

Our C34 skipper who sailed to Mexico has a Rocna 20 and loved it for his trip:

The Rocna. All 20kg of it with 100ft of chain. The rest of the world can debate all they like. When I pull into a place like Bodega Bay at midnight and the fog is so thick I can't see the jetty 50 feet away to make an entrance, I drop my hook in the rolling ocean swells with the surf crashing (Foster says it's like staying in a cheap Best Western beside the highway), and I sleep. And in the morning I have a windlass to pull the beast up and I wouldn't trade it for anything. (I also wouldn't add more chain - this works perfectly in 25 to 30 feet of water - you let all the chain out and you tie off nylon at the preferred scope and don't bother with snubbers and chain hooks and all that stuff...) This was our best upgrade.

You will love the anchor. Pulls me off the bow when it sets.

Me thinks the price reflects damage control.

Ha! I forgot about that Rocna silliness. Thanks for mentioning it, Tom.

Larry, we have a 45 lb Manson Supreme that is close in dimensions and shape to the Rocna and it fits the stock roller on our boat though it, and the Delta as well, will interfere with the furler drum to some extent. That is a very cheap price for a Rocna, I guess reflective of all the photos of Rocna's with bent shanks on the web for the last couple of years.

It looks like a helluva lot more serious anchor than what I'm carrying at present, so bent shank or not, it's gotta be a step up. The issue is whether it will rest well in the bow roller, and I'm hoping someone has a photo of one on their C36 MkII.

The product is now owned and produced by a new company. They say they will insure the product is built to the published specifications.

Even so, I'd probably choose a Manson Supreme if I was in the market for a new anchor as it is a similar design with similar good reviews and didn't have the problems Rocna did. The Manson also was less expensive but this price drop may have evened the field on that score.

I see by their web site warranty info that Rocna are giving a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser for material and manufacturing defects including bending if the anchor is properly sized to the boat per their recommendations. Not a bad way to show faith in the product.

Hi Larry,

That does sound like a good price for a Rocna. I was turned off by the rancor coming from the Rocna people on Sailnet and/or Cruisers forum. Lots of excuses, no solutions.

So I bought the 20 kg Manson Supreme. It has similar issues with the "pointy" end coming in contact with the gel coat at the bow. I drilled the lower section of my bow roller and installed an additional roller at the forward lower corner of the roller frame. This gives the anchor something to snug up against, leaving the gel coat out of harms way.

I will try to get a picture and post it. BTW, the SS plate of the roller is very hard!!! I ate up a couple of drill bits while doing this project.

Cheers, Bill

Thanks, Bill. Next time I am ner a 20kg Rocna I plan to trace a profile on cardboard so that I can see how it sets on my bow roller. If I do the tracing well and if it's useful enough maybe I can place a PDF of it in the Technical - Updates library.

Larry, you don't have to wait: http://www.rocna.com/product-range/dimensions/

I'm guessing that Manson has the same kind of information.
