For years are mast, has not had shims in it, but I'm thinking of putting them in before I reseal the boot around it.
any advice where to find shims or do you make them? Or do I just not use them? Thanks so much, Rich.

Richard,
You must have shims at the mast that only contact the collar around the hole in the deck. The mast is in compression, the loads are trying to drive the mast thru the keel. Without these shims the mast will be free to slam back and forth in the hole, from side to side, making a terrible noise. I sail in lake Michigan and that would be a real problem.
You can purchase some great shims from Catalina Direct, their number F8101, they want a good price but it is well worth it.
Go to Catalina Direct and enter size of boat, then hit Rigging, then hit Standing Rigging, then hit Spar Fittings. Halfway down the page you will find Mast Shims.
You will not be sorry, Captain Cliff
