Maine!

Well, we are about to do something I've wanted to do for a while. My wife and I and her sister and husband, are chartering in Maine next week. It's only a 4 day charter followed by the Jazz Festival in Bar Harbor with some hiking in ANP. Wish it could be longer, but we do what we can. We plan on a clock-wise route from Rockland to Brooklin, Isle Au Haute, Vinalhaven, then back to Rockland. Of course, this is carved in sand. Weather will be our guide. It's going to be very different from our regular cruising grounds here on the Gulf Coast, but considerably cooler this time of year. Can't wait!

What a trip! We really enjoyed cruising Maine. The worst part was the lobster pots! We only snagged one. Luckily, while under sail, between the rudder and the hull. Popped off pretty quick with the boat hook. Anyway, incredible sailing and scenery. Center Harbor in Brooklin is littered with beautiful wooden boats. I recommend a visit, even if you can walk across parts of Jericho Bay on the lobster pots!

Sounds great. Who did you charter with and what was boat? Are they good to deal with and was the boat good?

What I found was that it's a lot more expensive to charter in Maine than the BVI (the only other place I have chartered), pound for pound. We chartered with Johanson Boatworks in Rockland. The boat was a 1986 C&C33. Johanson was very easy to deal with. Mary is very laid back and well prepared (i.e. prompt!). Answered all of my queries very quickly. The dock staff (Max and crew) were also very good. He gave us a thorough briefing and there was a very detailed booklet on board that included everything he told us. If we forgot something, it was right there. Never had to call the base for anything. The boat was in good shape. The only thing that didn't work was the wind speed/angle gauge.

We also looked at Hinckley Charters. They have some beautiful older vessels (Hinckleys, of course) available, but they are very proud of them. We also had a harder time making the dates work with Hinckley.

Did not see any charter companies that offered cats. After seeing the number of lobster pots, I think I know why. Can't imagine navigating a cat in those waters.

Book early. The season is short.

EDIT: Re-considering the "expensive" statement above, that refers only to the cost of the boat. Travel and provisioning costs were considerably cheaper than the BVI.
