Horn repair

Does anyone know where I can get a new ship's horn? Ours is getting electricity, but does not work. If I loosen up all the screws, it barely works.

Interesting. Mine did not come with a horn installed. Did Catalina equip them for a few years?

Not sure if it were stock or not. It is hard wired into the 12 volt system, and a switch on the 12 volt panel. There is a button underneath the removable helm seat on the starboard side. The horn is next to the mast on the port side. Very professional job, so I suspect it was stock.

All I know is it doesn't work as designed, and am looking to replace / fix. At this point we are just using a hand held horn.

I have seen several dozen C36s up close and never saw one with a horn.

I always thought electric horns were a powerboat thing which they toot when they wave to their buddies, if they're sober enough to recognize each other. Whoops, did I say that out loud? Never seen one on a sailboat yet. We have an air cannister horn, which we haven't used in 7 years, and a couple of the manual air horn thingies.

Perhaps it was an additional installation then. I guess I could always remove it, and have an additional switch on the 12 volt panel. What is strange, is the panel is what I believe to be the original panel, and the label is of the same font/design as all other switch labels.

I installed an electric horn a few years ago on our 375. It did not work for very long. It turns out spiders really like the inside passages and made their nest in there. I took the horn apart, cleaned up everything and now it is loud again. I have since added a very fine stainless mesh over the opening; no spiders so far.

I have never seen another sailboat with a horn. No idea why. Most powerboats have them. Not as loud as the cannister air horn but I don't have to look for it when I need it. Just press the horn button.:)

Excuse my ignorance.
When do you use your horn?
I cannot think of an instance over the past 10 years when I would have used a horn.
We don't get fogs here and there are not that many boats around to hear it.

Strangely enough, we have used the horn more often on our sailboat then our previous powerboat.

We usually signal people when travelling from our dock to the breakwater (3/4 mile). Boaters seem to be focused ahead and do not notice boats silently gaining on them. Happens very often as I like to go "fast"; 2-3 knots....

I have done the same. Approaching another boat , and they don't see me, or won't answer a hail. I use the Rules of the Road signals for overtaking and approaching situations in channels. Out in open water, I haven't had to use it.

The horn appears to be a vibration type horn. It didn't work, so I loosened the face screws a bit and it started working. But last weekend I wanted to use it, and it didn't work again.

We also have an air canister horn, and a blow horn.
