I'm sure looking forward to it. Not only am I tired of this long, snowy winter, but I'm being laid off from my job of 28 years next Friday. I will now have time for all of those boat projects I've never had time for in the past; new windlass, install the Navpod, rigging replacement. Best of all, I'll be able to get out on the water during the week and skip the weekend crowds; it's like a different place during the week.

I hope this is a good thing for you. Like Ratty says to Toad from Wind in the Willows.
"There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not." Spoken by Ratty to Mole in Wind in the Willows a children's book by Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932).

I have been retired for 19 years. Like you I thought I was going to get all those jobs done around the house and on the boat. But, ask any retired guy, there are not enough hours in the day to get all those jobs done. Of course the things that used to take me an hour or so to accomplish now takes me all day.

I get up before daybreak, have breakfast and take out my "To-Do" list. It seems for every job I do I add two more on the list. I start out with ten things that have to be done, I do three or four of then and in the evening I have a list of twenty jobs. Now I put the list away and go sailing without worrying that someone else will do those jobs. They will be waiting for me when I get home.

Get used to it and enjoy.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'm actually looking forward to it as, fortunately, my wife has a great job and I don't have to worry about looking for something else myself. Not everyone is so fortunate. I usually multiply any task by 3; if it's on the boat by 4. And I'm still usually wrong. My Dad is about to turn 94, retired when he was 55. He still hasn't finished that ship model he started in the 70's....:)

Gary-

Glad to hear that things will work out ok and that you will have more time on the boat!

We are in a similar situation- my husband is retired and I am the working stiff!

We LOVE to get out on the Bay during the weekdays when we can, so I hope to see you out there!

We sail out of Fell's Point, so we'll look for you if we head out on a northerly tack.

Regards,

We can hardly wait until Friday. We are heading out of New Bern, NC headed for Beauford, NC. It promises to be a great few days on the water, probably in the upper 80's here.
