Garbage Advertisements on C36 Forum

We are getting bombarded by junk advertising on our forum.  Can't the administrators block this kind of crap ??

I'm guessing it's there to help offset the costs of maintaining the website.

There should be one ad at the top of the page. Any ad blocker plugin for your browser should make it go away. This has been on site since before I was in the association, so I'm not sure how the decision was made to have it. I assume that it is intended to offset the cost of the website as Don says. If there is a lot of aversion to it, it could be removed.

Strange that you are seeing ads posted to the email contact form?  I have not.  How are these phishing attacks getting through to individual member's profiles?  I am not getting them.

If I had to guess how this is done, someone broke into c36 database and stole user name and password and are logging in and sending out messages. The cure is to ask the registered users to change their passwords. Or contact the users that you have received email from and ask them to change their password and see if you are receiving any more of these emails.

It looks like someone is using the contact form on an old classified ad to send spam. https://www.catalina36.org/community/classified-ads/accessories-sale/may...

I assume this was left public to allow more people to potentially buy things, but the chance of spam may not be worth it. Clearing out old classified ads would help also. Peter, I think you should be able to remove the listing. I'm on my boat for the weekend but I could take it down when I'm back at a computer.

Requiring be logged in to the website to use the contact form would greatly cut down on this. I don't think there is much action in the classifieds anyway.

Classified ads are set up to be automatically "unpublished" after 90 days. For some reason there were a bunch that never were so I've unpublished them manually. There are two classifieds that have been up for less than 90 days, so I left those and will monitor to see that they get unpublished when they are supposed to. This should at least make sure that people recognize the topic of the email and know that spam is coming from their classified ad contact form. They can then decide if they want to remove the post.

Hi Eric, it appears that your removal of old classified ads might have worked. I have no received any in the past week.  Crossing my fingers and thanks again.
