Cockpit teak 'eyebrows'

Anyone ever removed the 'eyebrow' trim pieces on the back of the cabin house? The ones that run along the top edge outboard of the companionway?

I want to know what is underneath them - is it all gelcoat just like the rest of the boat or is there something ugly?

I have not taken mine off but I would guess that it is just gelcoat with a bunch of spider "stuff".

Ummm....something ain't right....ahh. No mast, mainsheet or any of that nasty stuff that clutters the cabin top. ;)

nothing but gelcoat and assorted holes for the screws to hold it in place!

I think I might get rid of all that wood. 30 year old boats have enough maintenance issues without excess varnishing. Anyone done that? Did it look ok?

Here's a picture I found on Flickr of a newer model. If you could find someone to work up a stainless/plastic companionway hatch border, and cover the epoxy-filled screw holes with some bags I could look pretty good.

Nimue,
i got rid of mine and i have to say i haven't missed them, i love the way teak looks but truthfully i can't say that i am thrilled with the upkeep on exterior teak. where it can be covered it holds up well, if it is not covered, not so much.
just my opinion,

Hi all, I removed mine on my C30 a while back and I think the overall effect is a cleaner look. Less maintenance and the gel coat is brand new!

BTW, I have made an offer on a 1988 C36 that has been accepted. Just trying to sell my boat first.
