CATV jack install

I'm thinking of installing a CATV jack on the boat so as to have an easy way of hooking up to shore cable.

While I have no real desire to watch TV while out cruising, given that we get free cable at my marina I wouldn't mind being able to watch live events every once in a while from the boat (I spend quite a few nights aboard).

Leading candidate is to install an external jack right next to my shore power inlet. These jacks cost $60-100 and look pretty easy to install (cut out a hole similar to the shore power, screw in, and voila). I can also spiral wrap the CATV cable around the shore cable as I run it down the dock, which should make everything a bit easier to manage.

The tricky part, I think, is going to be running a cable forward.

Has anyone run a cable from the aft lazarette all the way to the TV compartment forward of the settee / table? What's the best way to route this cable?

Has anyone done this, or considered it but installed the CATV jack elsewhere? The anchor locker is one suggestion someone else at my marina made, but I think getting at it to run the wiring might be more of a challenge. Thoughts?

David, I am surprised that Catalina didn't install one like I have seen on newer models. I own a 2001 MKII and mine is located in the anchor locker area. Are you certain that isn't one there? Just asking. It could save you a lot of work.

I didn't see one of these, but I'll double-check when I get back.

Where does the line run from the jack on the interior of the boat? I *definitely* haven't found anything inside resembling CATV.

Also, you're sure this was factory standard and not a dealer option?

David, after I hit the send button on my last post I thought to myself, gosh, I hope he doesn't think that I am insulting his intelligence. I thought you might had inadvertently overlooked the location of the coaxial sonnection in the anchor locker. Mine is located on the starrboard side of the anchor locker, toward the top. From there it runs on the same side back to what a lot of us refer to as the TV or coffee bar area with the sliding door. There it connects to a splitter. What I have done is connected a short run of coax to our flat screen TV that is mounted on the port side bulkhead of the main salon. I have no idea if this was a factory install or not. It's always nice to have the option for a television aboard on thsoe rainy days. Good luck.

We have one of these on our boat and it is installed exactly as Glenn describes. Given the age difference between that boats I'm thinking it was a factory option? No idea if it works or not never been anywhere that had cable TV at the dock.

A CATV jack is not a factory standard installation; perhaps it was an option. Our boat doesn't have that.

Routing from the aft lazarette: Remove the aft cabin closet (about 6 screws, easy to do) and you'll see two PVC pipes glassed in that allow cable runs to the starboard lazarette. I think you'll find enough room to thread additional ables through there if the two pipes are already full. Beneath the nav table is an access port, which can help you route cables farther forward.

Thanks all. I'm 99% sure my boat doesn't have the anchor locker CATV jack, but I'll check. It certainly doesn't have any coax lines running to the TV station, so even if the jack is there I would have to figure out the cable.

Do you guys usually use steel tape / a snake to run the cables or can you usually push them through?

Are you talking about removing the "whole" aft cabin closet or just the paneling at the back?

And ProfDruhot, can you provide more information on your flat panel installation on the port bulkhead? I am thinking of doing something similar. More specifically -- how big is the screen, how heavy is the TV, is it through-bolted, and have you ever had problems?

David, mounting the 21" flat screen TV was a rather simple project. You can purchase a wall mounting bracket that is easy to attach to the bulkhead and that attaches with a quick disconnect to the back of the television. Now, the challenge that I encountered was what do I do with all of these wires on the bulkhead in the head? I had the power cable, the coax cable and the audio lines dangling on the inside of the head. My wife suggested that we install a piece of plywood over the entire bulkhead. So, I picked up a piece of 3/4" marine-grade plywood and cut it to fit rather snug, I placed spacers on it every few inches (so that the wires would be undisturbed) and mounted it directly to the existing bulkhead (on the head side). I then tiled the entire surface using small mosaic tiles with matching mosaic tiles on the area on the hull between the sliding mirrors and the sink, as well as by the toilet. WHile I was upgrading the head I installed a 12V mascerator. I can only imagine how some of you are rolling your eyes saying that all of this is frill but you have to see it to appreciate it. Oh yeah, by the way, it only added approximately 30 lbs. to the entire project. This way, the final project looks nice and clean and there are no visible wires. I also built a book shelf directly above the television to hold DVDs and books.

I would attach some photos to show how these projects came out but every time I attempt to upload a photo there is a hassle of some sort. If someone can walk me through the process of uploading photos here I will be glad to do it. A picture is worth 1,000 words.

I'd love to see what you did, but I don't think I'm going to push the cables through the bulkhead -- my plan would be to run the two cables (just one HDMI and the power cable) down the bulkhead and behind the cushion. I'm locating the A/V gear underneath the seat near the mast. The p/o already ruined what would be perfectly nice storage by putting the air circulators for the heating system there, but I can install a shelf and some brackets which should work nicely.

21" is a bit smaller than I was thinking. Any idea how much it weighs? If its one of the older 21-inchers, it might not be that much heavier than the larger, 32-37 inch, 25-30 lb. ones I've been looking at.

Has anyone installed a large-ish flat screen on that bulkhead?

David, to remove the aft cabin closet simply remove the screws and the entire wood closet/drawer combination lifts out. To see what it looks like have a read through my article on Installing a Below Deck Autopilot, in the Technical - Upgrades archive. There are photos in that article of the disassembled aft closet and the conduits, I believe.
