anyone want to sail Kinera from Marblehead to the Baltimore area???

Hi All,

We just found out we will be moving to the Baltimore area in May. naturally timing is perfect...we have a baby due April 1st and have to move...should be fun. That said, unfortunately, i won't have time to bring Kinera from Marblehead, MA to the Annapolis area. I have never hired a capitan before and have no idea what the costs would be...

Do you have any idea how much it would cost and how to go about finding a reliable person? Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I don't want to post my e-mail on a web board, but if you'll send something on the C36 e-mail list I can provide the name of a lady delivery Captain and liveaboard we know from our previous marina. I don't know her rate, but she's done deliveries like this all over.

Subject to scheduling, heck I might do it for free. I need to say hi to friends in the Northeast anyway. Just cover boat expenses. Would need to be placed on your insurance as an Additional Insured. Let me know if you don't get a better offer.

Larry- if you are serious, my mate and I could consider meeting up with you and helping you sail her to our home area, namely, Baltimore.

We do not have ocean experience, but we are able sailors as crew for you. We are also familiar with the Chesapeake and could assist with local knowledge from sailors in our area.

Jack- Have you located a marina yet? We just found a nice place that is only $2000 a year! I can speak with you off line if you still need help finding a marina. We just searched and visited several places, so this may save you some time and money. Email me at: safetsuper(at)gmail(dot)com and we can exchange info.

I got my first 375 delivered by a mate. It worked out well. He delivered the boat, using it as a holiday. As there was no time constraint, he could wait out any weather issues, and just enjoy the trip.
It was a 600Nm trip. I paid for his return airfare, incidental costs, fuel and food. I think all up it cost me about $500.

Would I do it again? Yes, as there was no time limits it suited us both.

Oddly, Jack (& Laura), I am serious...provided it's in May, and provided I have flexibility in the dates of departure and arrival. My first thought was to solo the boat over about a 9 day period via a series of day trips, the general route being the Cape Cod Canal, the East River, and the Chesapeake Delaware Canal. Multiple stops along the way, of course. Once my wife hears about the idea she may insist on coming along.

A quick glance at my Coastal Explorer shows the total distance to be about 500nm, or about the same as the distance from Portland to Seattle.

So Larry I guess we wait and see what develops from this, but i too was serious if timing etc could work out.

Larry, this sounds great! Wow, thank you. My dates are very flexible. I plan to head to the boat in the next four to six weeks to paint the bottom and get her ready. We are moving around the end of April and I will fly back prior to departure. I really appreciate this and couldn't be happier to have someone of your experience aboard.

I will send you an email shortly with my contact info.

Laura - I too will be sending you an email! We haven't found a marina (mainly due to not having the time to put into it yet) so your guidance will be great!

Again, thank you all!

Jack

There was recently a discussion on the Cheasapeake Bay forum on Sailnet about the best time to make a trip similar to this. There was input from an experienced delivery Captain that he'd consider doing the passage any time due to his familararity with the route, but the general concencus was that June was the best time for a cruiser to make the hop.

If you have to go in May, be prepared to deal with Fog at the northern end, cool temps and the possibilty of strong northeasterlies. I think May is doable but requires greater flexibility to wait for a good weather window. Waiting later gets into Hurricane season, however you only need a 3-4 day window.

There's more detail in the thread if you want to give it a read.

Depending on timing I might also be able to tag along for all or part of the trip.
