Fuel Consumption

Hi Sailors and others,
This question has probably been discussed many a time on the forum in the past. I have not been able to find any posts relating to fuel consumption.
We are about to set off on an extended trip and am gathering information from other Catalina 36 Mk 2 sailors as to how much diesel to carry with us.

My questions are :
1) what would be the approximate average consumption when motoring at approximately 5 knots in a moderate sea if required.
2)approximate consumption of diesel when motor sailing with engine ticking over at approx 2000 RPM.

Please note that this information is for personal use only and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Nervous but excited.
Regards Bernd

Our experience has been .6 gallons per hour. This was most recently figured last spring, over a month or so, with mostly motoring, in varying conditions. I used to use .5 gallons per hour because it was easy to figure, but I think .6 is more realistic.

Prior to our new propeller, which uses engine torque differently, we knew that 0.5 US gallons per hour for 1800 RPM motor-sailing and 0.7 gallons per hour for hard motoring (2500 RPM) were good numbers.

2100 rpm with an autoprop I'm averaging 6.0 knots and 2.3 litres per hour... (0.53 US gals./ 0.44 Imp gals.)

With a standard 3 blade fixed prop on a M 35A engine, I consistently average just under .6 gal/hour. Usually cruise at 2300 to 2400 rpm.

Thanks to all who replied to my post. Its great to have some average fuel consumption figures to work with. My greatest fear is hearing that last splutter of the 'Iron Head sail' as you are entering a new port or crossing a bar.
