Persistent chainplate leak

Hi all,

I bought my 1999 C36 mkii last year and one of the things the PO indicated was that one of the chainplates had a leak that the marina seemed to not be able to fix. This year I rebedded it with butyl tape and, up to this moment, I thought I had fixed it. But, as I sit at anchor in an hours-long deluge, I see that the leak is still there, albeit almost invisibinvisible.

You can see in the picture the results of the marina's effort to fix it. I just scraped out what I could up top, cleaned the surfaces with acetone and mushed butyl tape in everywhere, using the method described on marinehowto.com. Maybe I missed a step!

Has anyone had this issue, or does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it once and for all?

P.S. - The chainplates are the new style.

Sounds like you may have  some  softening of the deck core which is  weakening the adhesive bond over time.  If so, remove the chainplate and let the core dry. Remove any rot and fill/seal with epoxy. Reassemble the chainplate with butyl or polysulfide caulk.

Yikes! I hope not! Nothing was picked up in the survey, but it's looks like I'll have to  check anyway as part of my troubleshooting. Thanks for the reply!

This is a real problem with Catalina 36s. Just a design flaw. I u hsed the new chain plate base units from Catalina d have to look it Direct, but I did not use buytle tape. I cleaned out to the very core all of the old caulking and then re-bedded it with 4200. So far not a drop on the inside. Good luck, Rich.

Yeah, I agree, not a great design decision. I was shocked to see water coming in, given how careful I was when I rebedded it.well, back to the drawing board!
