Technical specs and schematics

There's probably a simple answer to this I've managed to overlook, but ...... I am trying to locate on this site a complete list of available specs and schematics for a Catatlina 36.  Mine is a 1991 and sometimes known as a Mark 1.5.    What I'm looking for is something like this on the "site map" or "Table of Contents" on the Catalina 30 Association site --  https://catalina30.com/tableof.htm.    It has an easily navigated and very complete list of schematic.  Is there something like this on the 36 website?

I'm working on an exhaust problem and want to see the Catalina schematics.  I have a conceptual one from the owners manual but not one with dimensions and materials.   I've spent an hour or so looking for this.   I think another member provided a link on a post I saw last year that is now a needle in a haystack.  I know it's there somewhere.  (Maybe on another website entirely?).  Help!

Did you take a look at the manuals section (Members/Techical Articles/Manuals)?  Or go to  https://www.catalina36.org/members/technical/manuals

Having said that, I know there are a number of schematics in the manuals for the Mk1 and Mk2, but I don't recall them having a schematic for the exhaust system.

If the issue you are working on is the exhaust riser, a number of members (us included) have rebuilt/replaced it, and if you do a search you'll find some threads discussing the process and the materials.
https://www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/exhaust-riser-rebuild
https://www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/new-exhaust-riser
https://www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/new-exhaust-riser-1-14-black-iron-pipe
Some of those threads give materials dimensions, but given the variations in engines and locations of the waterlift muffler, I think there is probably no one-size-fits-all dimension, so you most likely need to do some of your own measurements to suit.
Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your reply.  I will double check to see if I missed any of the exhaust issue threads you cite and will check the manual link.  I do have a paper copy of the manual but may have missed something.  FYI here's the culprit I think:

Yep -- the water injection elbow.   That looks like the one that was on our boat -- see pictures in this comment: www.catalina36.org/comment/58716#comment-58716 .  From the exhaust streaks, I'm guessing the horizontal pipe or the reducer -- the one that that enters it laterally from the starboard side -- has failed/is failing.   That piping is generally black steel pipe, but that elbow is machined aluminum, if I recall correctly.
As you can see from my linked picture, for some reason Catalina used this elbow, which was sized for 1.5" pipe, so a reducer had to be used to connect it to the horizonal pipe, which is 1.25".    We reused this elbow in our first rebuild, but later just replaced it entirely with regular 1.25" pipe elbow and below it a 1.25" water injection pipe nipple  (i.e. the short piece of pipe that joint the elbow to the hump hose, as in this picture....www.realitycheck.me/gallery/exhaust_riser/thumbs/exhaust%20riser%20before%20wrap.JPG
(the author of that page has a nice write-up of the rebuild process,
at www.realitycheck.me/building-a-new-exhaust-riser.htm ).

You can get that the water injection pipe nipple here:
www.westerbeke.com/Product/NIPPLE/299693?productname=NIPPLE&productid=54202A2FDAF73B1CA82D9219

The rest of the pipe can be sourced at any plumbing supply (or big-box home improvement joint) if you are going with black pipe.   As you'll read in the threads I linked earlier, I used schedule 80 seamless stainless pipe, which is harder to find but available at Grainger's (gainger.com).  No idea whether stainless will last longer than black pipe, but so far we're good after 5 years (knock on fibreglass).
The alternative is a one-piece exhaust riser from Catalina Direct -- www.catalinadirect.com/shop-by-boat/catalina-36/engine/exhaust-system/ - but you must make sure you get all the dimensions and pipe angles just right, because it can't be adjusted to fit after the fact (a major reason, besides price, why many C36IA members make their own out of pipe fittings instead).
  Have fun!

P.S.  I know that if I want to persue further discussion in detail re: the best fix I should either add to or start a new string on exhaust leak issues.  Just couldn't resist sending you the photo

Given the soot blowing on the water injection elbow, you likely have an exhaust leak under the lagging.  This is potentially fatal from CO poisoning.   You'll need to remove the lagging and look for leaks.  CD has complete exhaust or take yours to a shop and have them make a new one.

also replace the hose to the muffler with a proper silicon hump hose.

Am joining this because I have the same problem locating anything more that the diagram from the Mark 1 owners manual for the general exhaiust system layout.  We need to replace the muffler hose AFTER the wet muffler.  The section from the thru hull to where it disappears under the deck going forward is badly cracked.  I suspect its pretty much the same all the way to the Aqua-Lift muffler.  All else was replaced last year.  Any help on snaking a new one is appreciated!  John  ~"Tranquility" 1992  MK 1.5 #1176

The exhaust hose on MK1's after the water lift muffler goes up behind the port lazerette, then aft to the aft lazerette then out the thru hull.  If you need to replace it, sew the new and old exhausts together and pull from the stern end, with someone feeding from the aft birth

What I love (or hate) about this site is it gives one a chance to preview all the things that will eventually fail and need repair/replacement -- and then how to fix them!

Jwskawki posted vitually at the very same time as I discovered yesterday -- while on the last voyage of the season -- that we have a crack in the exhaust hose just above the stern through hull, and that running the engine effectively works to pump a steady stream (albeit manageable for the bilge pumps) of exhaust water into area under the steering quadrant.

And then within a few hours, Les had posted as to how to go about fixing it.

Oddly enough, the only reason I was looking into the area under the quadrant was because of Les' recent Mainsheet article on checking for - and fixing -- leaks at the rudder post.   No leak at the rudder post -- but at least now I know why our bilge pumps have been tripping so often!
