I am switching from a maual windlass to electric on my 1990 36"
I have tried researching the website for pictures of installation. My boat has 250 feet of 5/16 chain and 200 feet of 1/2 inch 3 strand rode.
I have seen links to the Catalina 34 owners webstite they do not seem to be active links.
I am looking for photos of installations - I am leaning to a horizontal windlass and do not wish to cut the deck hatch, if at all possible.
Any help will be appreciated.

Factory install on my 1989 is a maxwell 500 VC that's mounted horizontally in the space in front of the v birth. and sticks out into the locker.
you can fit a larger windlass in there to handle whatever chain/rode combo you like.
I have a 1990 C36 that has, I believe, a Maxwell VC 500. I am going to the boat in a bit and will take a pic. of how and where it is mounted.

We have a 1990 C-36 hull # 1041 and have a horizontally mounted winch located in the anchor locker. As the boat is in the water here in Florida, we will take some pictures and forward them off to you. One thing I wanted to mention to you was; before buying any windless, be sure your existing 250 feet of chain fits into the winches' chain gypsy, otherwise, you'll have a good deal of chain left over from this project. When I replaced my anchor winch, I sent Bacon's in Annapolis, a piece of my chain to insure it would fit into the gypsy since not all 5/16" chain links are of uniform size. Just something to think about........

I second the point about testing chain sizing. We double checked we were getting the right size but it's not right, still way too loud and shakes like mad when we use it. Need new chain but will test a length of it first before buying the full amount.

We changed the original Maxwell V500, by a Vm 10 in our C36 (1122) 1991. Both are horizontal, we use 8mm chain and works extremely well.

I have a comment that is not exactly on track, but might be worth considering. IMHO, unless you are anchoring in really gnarly areas (rock, coral etc) for lighter pocket cruisers like the '36, 250' chain adds too much weight to the bow for no particular advantage. 100-120' of 5/16 chain will keep you on all chain so much of the time in ordinary anchoring situations. With a rope rode backing of maybe 200' you have virtually all situations covered. Just a thought as long as you are redoing your system.

Thank you for those comments; For my anticpaetd sailing area - Esatern end of Long Island, Block Island, Connecticit, Rhode Island, etc. I too tjhought 250' chain was abit excessive; I also have over 200' of rode.
ghe weight of the chain and storage of it and the rode are also considerations for the anchor locker.
The PO had palaced the chain through a PVC pipe into the bilge area forward of the bow water tank, but that chain gets "hung up" at the bottom area of the vee-berth where tyhe cahin has to then "turn to go into the bilge.
I would like to have the chain and rode in the anchor locker.

Mother Ocean, from your pic it appears that your using the capstan to retrieve chain. Does that actually work?
Here is a photo of how I did mine on 1992 Catalina 36 #1201
i used Lewmar VX1, 500 watt. Some may consider it to be a bit light for the boat. But there is a space constraint.
I would have preferred the VX1L but could not get it in time.
I've used it every day for the past month with no issues.

I have a 1991 Mark "1.5" without a windlass. I may install one in the future. The pedestal in my anchor locker looks the same as in the photo. My questioin is that did Catalina build in enough strength into the vertical pedistal wall on all boats whether they were ordered with a windlass or not?
P.S. I'm assuming I could install a horizontal windlass similar to the Maxwell mentioned at the beginning of the chain.
