Unknown Box

I have this wood box that is permenanatly glassed to the ceilling of the aft birth. It is covered with a alyer of spunge then vinal - I guess so that one does not get hurt by hitting their head.
Does anyone know what this box is for and what is in it. It appears to be just below port lazarette. Viewing from the inside of the lazarette there is no indication of what this box is for.
I have salt water or seawater leaking next to the area where it is touching the vertical wall. I wanted to see where this leak is originating from.
Haro.

Only guessing, but if that box creates a recess in the floor of the locker, possibly a place to store a dinghy motor? Glass it up and stop the leak. Seems like a clever use of space.

Thank you, Mike for your response.
I see that you also have the 1999 version. Do you have this box?
There is nothing recessed from above.
I will remove the covered cushion and take photo of it.
Thanks.

Haro -
This question about the mystery box comes up every few years on this site.  See, e.g.,  www.catalina36.org/forum/sailing-discussion/wood-box
What you are looking at is simply the projection of the underside of the aft end of galley counter into the aft cabin, right next to the companionway stair.
So as to your question "Does anyone know what ... is in it"  -- the answer would be "a can of beer, a bowl of fruit, or whatever happens to be sitting at the back of your galley counter at the moment"!

At to the water leak, my first guess would be to check on the venting loop for the raw water.  There should be a loop of hose that runs up there on its way from the engine to the injection point on the exhaust riser, located in that cabinet behind the sliding doors in the aft cabin.  It has a vacuum breaker at the top of the loop to prevent water from syphoning back into the engine (not a good thing to happen).  See the picture below.   The vacuum breaker can get clogged with salt crystals and start to leak.  Unscrew it and rinse it out in fresh water (its something that should be part of yearly maintanance, anyway), and see if that helps.  You can test it once its removed by trying to blowing into it; it should seal.  If not, replace it.

Thank you all. I had not realised there had been posts about this before at this link https://www.catalina36.org/forum/sailing-discussion/wood-box
It appears that it remains a mistery.
It is definitly above the counter.
If someone knows who to call at Catalina - I think it would help.
Thanks.

NOT a mystery -- Catalina will tell you the same thing.  The so-called "box" is nothing more than the underside of the counter.
Look at the sliding "pass-through" from the aft-cabin to the galley, which appears on the right in the picture you posted.   Now go stand in the galley and look directly above the pass-through -- you'll be looking at the counter; reach through the pass-through and you'll feel the padded underside (what you are calling a "box").  See the picture below -- you can see that we mounted our microwave below the "mystery box" so that its accessable through what was the "pass-through".
