Hi All, Am looking to buy a 1994 Catalina 36 Mk I, and am having a survey done. The surveyor has been quite thorough and meticulous, discovering a number of issues that indicate a lack of maintenance and neglect in the past few years. The boat looks great, like a much newer boat. However, his meter detected a lot of moisture (30%) in 2 out of 3 intercostals down below the dinette, in the bilge. A survey of two years ago did not show this (and I just talked with that surveyor who says he always checks the transverse members). So it is a new issue, possibly the result of a collision the current owner had with a steel dock!
In any case, has anyone ever dealt with this issue of wet transverse members? And how bad is it? The first surveyor says Catalina Mk I's used marine plywood in those transverse members, and that it is not an unusual condition.
thanks for any help you can provide.
cheers
Dan
