dry dipstick

I'm stumped.
After shutting down the engine and letting it cool down the oil dipstick is bone dry. Yet when I reinsert it and check again there's plenty of oil on it.
Am I the only one with this odd issue?  Engine is the M25.
All I can think of is the oil cooling causes the oil to be drawn out of the dipstick tube, but I'm fishing here and it doesn't make sense. I tried opening the filler cap first then check the oil but the same 'problem' ; one very shiny dipstick. Try again and voilla! plenty of oil.
Any ideas???

I have an m25xp and when I check my oil - the dipstick will have frequently crept up and is sitting on the rubber stopper instead of being fully inserted.  I have to make sure I push the stick in all the way before taking an oil reading.

This is the norm for the M25 on our boat.
My theory -- and I'm sticking with it -- is that after engine shut down, until one "vents" the dipstick tube by removing the stick, there is no way for the oil to displace the air in the tube as it drains back into the sump.  Think about putting a straw into a glass of water with your finger over the top -- virtually no water will enter the straw until you remove your finger and vent it.

Thanks for the replies. Now I can scratch this off the worry list.

Don't worry, there will always be new ones to replace it!
