PSS Shaft Seal

Was hauled out for bottom job and asked the yard to install a PSS shaft seal. They said there needed to be at least 8 inches of space available to do the install. Said there is only about 6 inches of space.

On the forums I've seen numerous references to C-36's with the PSS installed, though not sure if those boats are MKI or MKII.

Are there any 1985ish boats out there who have been able to use the PSS?

Thanks!

David-

Something to think about- "Dripless" packing in the conventional stuffing box. I've used this for the past four seasons with hardly any adjustment and very little water intrusion. It also runs relatively cool. A much better product than the old wax based packing, and less complex than a PSS shaft seal.

I replaced the flax with this 1/4" GFO GORE Flax over 3 years ago and have had very little leaks.
Pack Lanacote before installing the nut containing the 3 pieces of flax to make it work at its best.
Hand tighten the nut.

Just to be clear Lanacote is not packing, but a lube/coating that prevents corrosion.  You still need some Flax or graphite packing in there.  See https://marinehowto.com/re-packing-a-traditional-stuffing-box/

Verify with PSS where to measure from - maybe the yard is measuring from forward end of the rubber hose instead of start of shaft log or aft end of rubber hose.

But I agree there is very little room in there.

I used the GFO GORE TEX. the manufacturer recomends to not use any packing. The graphite in the GFO provides the lubrication.
The Lanacote simply seals the propeller shaft before the flax and keeps the water from comming in.
As required there is still some drips when the propeller shaft turns. But after it is at rest the Lanacote hardens and prevents water from comming in.

I have an 89 MK1 and a PSS dripless seal installed by the previous owner.  Works great so far.
Seems like there is plenty of room.
