Paint for pedestal and stern cowl vent

The white paint on my pedestal and stern cowl vents is beginning to chip. Has anyone had this and what paint did you use to touch up?

thanks in advance.

my thought on that is when it gets bad enough (probably next year or year after) - I'll wait till winter and pull it and take it to a powder coater.  If you find a good paint let us know it would be a whole lot less work that removing the pedestal..

I did this once using regular Interlux white deck paint. You have to use  a metal primer first though that looks like a greenish yellow so the paint adheres to the pedestal

Aluminum requires a protective coating prior to painting. Otherwise, you won't get any adhesion and will end up having to paint every year. Google "Chromate Conversion Coatings" and you should find some info. One trade name is Alodine by Henkle. I think most conversion coatings are two part formulas and can be brushed on, but the aluminum should be sanded smooth and cleaned prior.

Looks like there may be some Alodine dealers in my area. I'll check it out. Thank you.

Thanks Chuck - once you completed the work with the primer and the interlux - did the finish last?

I used Alodine to prime a lower outboard motor housing (aluminum) and the top coat paint adhered well to it.  No paint would stick any length of time without the primer

Tim.... it lasted. I had sanded it down first so nobody ever noticed the repair.
