Questions about Oberdoorfer N202M-16 Water Pump retrofit

Hello all, just had to turn around and go home on my way to Catalina due to engine overheat. When I looked over the side there was no water coming out the exhaust. I checked all the hoses and the thru hull, and everything checked out. So that leaves my Sherwood water pump.

I noticed that the pump appears rusted, corroded, and there is some oil leaking out of it where it attaches to the engine block.

After seaching this website, I notice that many sailors recommend replacing the Sherwood with the Oberdorfer I mentioned in the title of this post, so I went ahead and ordered one.

I was wondering if anyone can answer the following questions:

1) seeing how there is oil leaking from my Sherwood, does that mean I need to drain my engine oil before replacing it?

2) do I need to purchase a special gasket to where the Oberdorfer attaches to the Engine block?

3) can the hose nipples on my Sherwood be reused on the Oberdorfer?

4) are their any questions I should be asking that I have failed to include above?

Any answers, comments, pointers, etc would be greatly appreciated!

All the best--Joel S.

Joel.... in answer to your questions

1) I would change the oil... $30 fix so its not a big deal.
.2) I got the adapter kit with the pump that included a new gasket (very simple paper type gasket)
3) The two nipples are different sizes as are the hoses so save the old one that is the larger size to put on the new pump as the nipples I received were both the smaller sized ones.
4) Start spraying the two clips that hold the old pump in place with a rust breaker so you can unscrew them. You'll need a small (as I recall metric) wrench to get the two bolted in clips out. I also used a vice grip since one started to strip. Once you get the two out, its a simple job. There is very little room between the pump and the block so a ratchet wrench wont fit. Get the right wrench before you start or you'll have problems.
5) I found one of the clips putting in the new pump would not grip correctly unless you rotated it about an 1/8th of  a turn. It still holds fast that way and I have had no problem all summer.

Thanks for the tips, Chuck.  As for my oil question, I just changed my oil.  So I want to know if it is necessary for my to drain said oil before I take the Sherwood water pump out.  In other words, will oil come gushing out if I don't drain the oil first?

Thanks a bunch--JS

Hey Joel.  Oil will not come gushing.  Any oil that makes it past the pump lip seal and then visible via the weep holes is really only happening during engine operation.

Once you remove your pump, you should check to make sure your engine is not missing the Cam Shaft Tang Reinforcing Sleeve as show in the enclosed Service Bulletin: https://www.westerbeke.com/service%20bulletin/service%20bulletin%20235%2...

If the ring that is supposed to be installed on the shaft is missing - Universal will send one to you free of charge. This ring prevents it from breaking. Contact them and provide the serial and the model number of your engine. If you reuse the in and out  "L" shaped hose connections - you must file one of them so that they do not touch each other.

Here is a post regarding the free ring

If it is missing, it will mark the first time I have ever been sent something for free for my boat!  Usually the procedure is open wallet, hand over your savings, try to keep from crying.

Not to bust a bubble, but if you read the bulletin Nick listed you will note that it is no longer being offered for free.

I stand corrected - thank you for the update. I go it free and I have one that is in its original unopened contained. I will offer it to anyone who is willing to pay for shipping. It is for M35B engine.
