I just bought a new faucet to replace the old one in the head. But I can't figure out how to take off the retaining clip under the sink. Any suggestions? I am very concerned that the drilled out area has been weakened and will not hold up to a lot of pressure if I try to pry it off (see picture). Any ideas on how to go about getting the retaining clip off without doing damage to the countertop above???
Thanks a bunch for any suggestions--Joel S.
PS A friend of mine suggested all that drilling out under the sink may have been done by the factory to accomodate unanticipated faucets that were too narrow to fit through the sinktop. Has anyone else notice the same thing under their sink? (estpecially those with 1992-93 boats)

I just replaced my faucet and it disassembled by turning the faucet above the countertop. It is similar to a typical faucet assembly in your house. You have to remove the actual faucet head first.

Did yours have the retractable shower head on it? Did it have hot and cold hookups passing through the retaining clip? I'm having trouble envisioning how the faucet spins without hot and cold hookups spinning too. Or maybe I should be looking at it another way...Did your hookups spin freely inside the retaining clip when you unscrewed the faucet?

Mine had a retractable shower head. The faucet head unscrews and the tube through the countertop can be unscrewed from the retaining plate below the countertop. My replacement unit was similar.

Thanks for your replies. Gary, thanks VERY much for the picture. So it appears that the faucet unscrews from the top. I thought it had to come off by removing the retaining clip from underneath (boy was I wrong!). Now it all makes much more sense.
Hey Gary, I was looking at your pictures and noticed two large O-rings. My new shower/faucet also came with two large O-rings, with one slightly larger than the other. Unfortunately, the new shower/faucet didn't come with instructions. I'm just curious where they go. I'm pretty sure that one of them provides a barrier between the faucet and the countertop, but where does the other one go???
Again, thanks for your replies and picture--Joel S :o

Joel,
One is like an "O" ring to seal the assembly to the countertop, and the other actually goes on the underside it is pretty much a flat washer/gasket with clearance for the plumbing and threaded portion to pass through.

GaryB,
Thank you very much for the photo also. This is a job I need to do myself and your photo helped to answer my question. I assume that re-assembly you just have to hold the locking ring in place and screw in the tube from the top?
Thank you,

Gary, That is correct. Will have to hold reasonably flat to start thread so you do not cross thread.
