My boat is a 2000 Catalina 36. I have to assume the LP 1# tank is the age of the boat. What is the average life of the one pound LP tanks used on our Catalina 36's? Don't these have to be pressured tested (like scuba tanks) after so many years after manufacturing? Do most LP fill stations do the pressure testing?

The aluminum tank will need to be visual inspection and re-stamped. They don’t require a hydro test. I had the one on my boat inspected and stamped this year.

Aluminum cylinder can last for decades. Fillers are supposed to visual inspect before filling and they should also check the recertification period. Illegal to refill a cylinder that has a certification that has expired. Here's the guidelines: http://phmsa.dot.gov/pv_obj_cache/pv_obj_id_0AC374C72CE4B82CD55A384509C1...

Gentlemen
i still have my original tank and it still has gas in it as I only use it several times a year. The microwave and grill on the dock are just too convenient. I know this tank can never be refilled (20 yrs old). Is it still safe to have? I am in fresh water. Thanks

Richard,
You asked if it's still safe to have this steel tank. Probably, since it currently holding propane under pressure but just marginally - and there will be a problem if you try and get it re-filled. Propane is highly volatile stuff and if you develop a leak and it is ignited - there will only be very small pieces of your boat left. I'd think about replacing the tank. The tank is steel and may not show any signs of rust but
are you going to wait until it leaks ? - Get it out of there and replace it !
Might be the best $100.00 bucks you'll spend.....
Just my opinion.

That is a nasty picture. You are correct; I will remove it and get a replacement.
Thanks for the wake up.
