Engine Shutting down at high RPM's

I am having problems with my engine shutting down when running at higher RPM's (2400 - 2600). Fuel and Tank are clean. I have changed 3 or the 4 fuel lines from the tank to the injectors. My fuel filters are always clean. Engine Temp and oil pressure are normal. I can run at lower RPM's for hours and do not have any problems. At 2100 RPM's I can get about 4.8 - 5 kts. of boat speed in calm conditions. It seems to me I should be able to get 6.0 - 6.5 kts. of boat speed at 2400 RPM's in calm conditions.

Any suggestions?

Thank-you

Dean

By shutting down, do you mean it actually stops running? Is restarting easy? Any noises or rough running immediately before shutdown? Any black smoke from the exhaust?

You seem to have two problems (1) Your speed is low for the amount of RPM, so the first thing I’d check is if your tachometer and speed measuring are accurate. (2) Shutting down. The vast majority of diesel engine issues are fuel delivery related. Either not enough fuel, air mixed in fuel, injector pump/timing, faulty governor. Some basic sanity checks for #2:

  • Engine stopped, transmission in neutral. Rotate the prop shaft. Rotate freely?
  • Engine stopped, key switch held in preheat position. Do you hear the lift pump clicking?
  • Engine stopped, disconnect the fuel return line at the engine, key switch held in preheat position. You should observe a bit of flow.
  • Where you disconnected the fuel return line, blow into the fitting that goes to the engine. It should be clear.

Air getting into the fuel may yield similar symptoms.

Don't forget the filter in the lift pump.

Chuck and Nick,

Thank you for your suggestions. To clarify - motor shut down completly yesterday. Today, at high RPM's (2600) motor sputtered/lost RPM's and resumed at 2600RPM's on its own. It did this several times.

Prop spins freely. Lift pump clicks when key turned. I did clean the screen on the vent to the tank this morning, about 1/2 of it was fouled. It did run longer today before sputtering than yesterday. Ran fine at the lower RPM's.

My tachometer reading was jumping/fluctuating after running the motor 40 minutes.????

It is a mystery to me. I will give the fuel return line suggestions a try when I get more time on the boat.

Ahhhh.  Forgot the tank might be developing a vacuum if the tank vent is clogged and thus starving the lift pump.  This seems like a very likely suspect given the sputter/resume behavior.  Might try running with the fuel filler cap unscrewed enough to act as a secondary vent and see if this makes a difference.  Your tachometer jumping around can be a "normal" artifact of your batteries at full charge.  When it starts to jump around, go turn on all your cabin lights plus your exterior lights and see if this changes things.  I still suspect your speed vs. tachometer reading is not correct unless your boat hull is very fouled.

Has your boat speed vs. tachometer always have this ratio or is this something new/recent?

I had the exact problem and did what you did... changing the filters. Turned out the fuel line into the primary water seperator fiilter (which makes a 90 degree turn on a fitting) was clogged . The filter never got a chance to do its job. Try cleaning that out as its the simplest thing to try.

Thank-you for the suggestions. I think ( I hope) I found the problem. While checking for a hairline crack on the plastic caps on the top of my RACOR filter body, I discovered under the one that sits flush on the other side of the "IN" fuel fitting, that it was clogged with dead algae. I cleaned out the area, about the size of the tip of a thumb. I was able to run the engine this morning for close to an hour atr 2500- 2800 RPM's with no sputtering or shut-downs.

I will be able to test the system better on our trip down or back up from Catalina in July.

Chuck, do you keep your boat in Ventura Isle Marina? Did you have a Cal 34 before this boat?

Thanks again,

Dean

That's me. So you got a Catalina too! That's too funny. Where are you keeping "Her"

I miss the Cal, but the 36 is so much more boat.
