thermostat housing to cylinder head

Hello all 36'ers
I have a real dilemma here. We were motoring in after tearing a head sail during weds night beer can race and the engine overheated.
I pressure tested the cooling system to find a leak. Unfortunately I found a leak where the aluminum housing under the T-stat mates to the cylinder head.
It appears that when I bolted the alternator bracket to the housing its pulling the housing away from the cylinder head. After viewing photos it appears the top bolt in the bracket is "suppose" to go all the way thru to the cylinder head. when I fixed the bracket I installed a helicoil into the housing to secure the bracket to the housing because there wasn't a bolt there.
THE BAD NEWS
After inspection it looks like the cylinder head has to come off to change this gasket and repair the broken/missing bolt.
Has anyone out here been down this road?
I am a career automotive mechanic so R&Ring the head isnt a big issue for me.
thanks for the input

Can you point out where you think your issue is from this picture?

It is difficult in this picture to point out the leaking area. the alt. bracket is mounted to the t-stat housing. What you cant see in this pic is that the t-stat housing is bolted to the head BEHIND the water pump. there is no way to remove the housing without removing the head.

Because the stud is not there the housing is not supported where I bolted the bracket to the housing. The bracket tension has pulled housing away from the head to leak when the pressure is up

I have a real nice camera so i will be taking up close pics of the whole adventure then I will do up an article for an upcoming Mainsheet
