Spring sailing

Hello fellow Catalina sailors,
My wife and I are on a three month cruise on the coast of Southern and Central California aboard our (new to us) 2003 Catalina MarkII sailboat. We sailed down from Ventura last week and have been in Catalina Harbor relaxing and getting to know the various systems on our boat. We have met a few other cruisers that are out here and are enjoying the fantastic weather.
We were going to go down to Mexico and sail the Sea of Cortez but because of the recent boat embargoes and a recent development with my fathers and my mother-in-laws health we decided to explore the local coast allowing us quick access to a trip home by land if we needed to get home quickly.
From here we will start to work our way north, eventually, hoping to make it to San Francisco Bay. We have friends who sail out of Vallejo and plan to do some buddy boat sails with them to Petaluma, Napa, Angel Island and the waterfront and other areas in the bay.
We are keeping an eye on the weather and will plan our legs north on southerly winds or calms, using our engine to cover ground when possible. If there are other Catalina group members on board as we head north we would love to met with you and gather "local knowledge" whenever possible.
We plan on heading south at the beginning on May, stopping in places that we hurried through because of a good weather window going north for a longer visit whenever possible.
We really enjoy this site, lots of good information.

The Mexico embargo is mostly a thing of the past and while there are a few stories of some remaining issues, these are being worked out. Mostly, some of the Marinas did not have good paperwork and while the Marinas are partly to blame it is important that you ensure they have a complete set of your documentation. This includes US Coastguard CDI, valid liability insurance for Mexico and a valid Mexican 10 year import permit.
Hilbre has been in Mexico during this whole issue; we had no problems and continue to have no problems.
