Deck leaking gunk

Evening Guys

I have a 1988 Mach II C36 in Annapolis, Maryland.

As you know, the boat has two vents in the cabin trunk, one stbd one port, just about in line with the galley sink. They are covered on the exterior by cowl vents.

In my case, the interior of the circular vent opening has developed a horizontal crack all the way around the opening. Black gunk is slowly leaking from the crack. I assume this means that I have some moisture in my deck.

I've attached a photo of the problem.

Any suggestions on how to properly diagnose and remedy this problem?

It does not look good, see some at the junction of the hand rail and coach roof aft as well. I does look a bit like mold in the picture, you are in a fairly humid environment. Is the vent kept open? Moisture in the deck is possible as is condensation and mold if you keep this vent closed.

Any bubbling or blistering externally? A moisture meter and someone with experience using it is in order.

You state you have a 1988 MKII, if it is a 1988, it is a MKI, 1998 maybe?

Thanks Steve. The gunk near the handrail is just dripping from the vent are. Yes, I'm figuring I need to have someone take a look.

I have somewhat of the same issue on my 1987. I'm thinking that mine is a leak under the teak trim that holds the sliding hatch cover. I have sealed the cracks in the dorade housing and resealed the screws on the deck. This winter I plan on taking the teak trim off and see what is going on under the hatch.

I came to this conclusion after noticing that the only time it leaked was when we had heavy rains and not when I washed the boat. Mine is also more liquid than gunk :-)

Ncabot, I like that you referred to your boat as a *Mach II* instead of a Mark II. I think that's a change that Catalina marketing should readily endorse.

Kudos.

We had the same issue many years ago. Replaced the whole dorade, both sides. Still had a leak.

Turned out to be the traveler. Pulled off the traveler "bar", rebedded, dry ever since.
