PERF for 1992 Catalina 36 TM Wing Keel

Hi Folks,

Looking to do a solo race or two on the great lakes next summer with the Catalina 36.

She's a 1992, tall mast, wing keel, with a fully battened main and a 135 genoa.

Wondering if anyone has a similar boat & can could let me know what your PERF is a) when sailing white sail and b) with spin.

Many Thanks in advance.

Under PHRF-NW, I have rating of 174 for my wing keel, standard rig '95 with an undersized spinnaker and three blade max prop. My friend Paul (Mata Hari #1660) has a rating of 147 for his tall rig, fin keel with all standard sized sails. You should be in that range. I believe that thye NW adjustment for a tall rig is 6 seconds. And his fin keel gets him another 6 second adjustment.

Add 18 seconds for white sails ratings in the NW, so we would be 192 in that configuration. Of course, if you are sailing under LM-PHRF, your numbers will probably be a bit faster than ours. A few years ago, PHRF-NW adjusted all boats up by 10% to give slower boats a better chance of winning.

Chuck,
This topic has been discussed many times before. Suggest you also do a search for "PHRF". The search icon is located on the blue bar above these posts. I came up with about 20 hits. Hope this helps.

We sail a Catalina 36 Mk 11 TM with fin keel on Lake Ontario and were given a PHRF-LO of 156 for white sails, based on 155% genoa.

I've got a 2004 C36 TM and wing keel. What rating did you end up with? I sail out of Milwaukee Wisconsin and I'm thinking of doing some GLSS events this year. I did the Chicago Mac GLSS back in 2001 on a Catalina 25, but that's nearly the sum total of my prior racing experience.

This link will give you an idea http://offshore.ussailing.org/Assets/Offshore/PHRF/Hi+Lo+Mean+Report+Sep...
You will need to contact LMPHRF here to get a rating http://www.lmphrf.org/index.html
The differant regions have differant rules, that's why the ratings vary so much across the country.

I contacted LMPHRF and they gave me a long form that I have no idea of how to fill out. The numbers they require are nowhere in my owners manual. Particularly the mainsail numbers. I need HB, MGT, MGU, MGM, and MGL for a stock roller furled mainsail on a tall mast Catalina 36. Anybody know where I can get those numbers?

The local club wants my PHRF number, PHRF people want my US Sailing number, and US Sailing plus everyone else wants my credit card number. This is worse than doing taxes, reminds of day at the races with Marx Brothers.

Greg
My sail number is the four numbers after the CTYR letters of my hull number.
CTYR1050J990. Thus they are 1050. However some racing organizations allow the use of different numbers for instance just the last two numbers "50".

Most sailboat racers, regardless of their skill level, are eger to assist new comers into the sport. If you know someone who already is racing in your area I am sure they will help you filling out the forms just like people on the C36 family would do.

In most areas it is not mandatory to join USSailing to race,if you do join they will assign you a sail number. Most racers that do not join use their hull number as a sail number. The sail measurement they are asking for are the girth measurements for the mainsail at 1/4,1/2,3/4, and 7/8 of the luff, and the headboard. If they exceed a certain percentage of the E measurement you recieve a rating penalty. With a roller furling main that has no battens and a negative roach, you would recieve a rating credit. PHRF just needs these measurements verified to rate the boat properly.
