removing mast collar will stick is up?

Hi,
I have located someone that is willing to fabricate a SS mast collar for my Mark I and he is willing to design it in a way the there will be two halves that overlap each other, the collar will provide alot more connection points for connection turning blocks. the main reason for my request that it be able to be separated into two sections is so that i can put it on with removing the stick. one of the reasons is the cost of removing the mast and then remouniting it but that is not the only reason.
my question is does the mast collar serve any purpose if there are no turning blocks attached to it? could i cut my mast collar off with out any ill effects? i am not aware of any purpose that it serves other than to have attachment points for the turning blocks. I used spartite when i install the mast so it is not a matter of the collar providing a place for the chocks.

are bad things going to happen if i do remove the collar?

I am not an expert at that - but I would imagine that it prevents the mast from damaging the deck if it were to fall due to failure. The big hole is re-enforced by the metal coller. I would not remove it or cut it in half. I would like to know what Catalina would say about that.

True it is reinforced by the collar but the spartite is really holding in place at this point and it is not like the boat would be going anywhere, that said I guess it would not be a bad idea to check with Catalina. There is a LOT of downward force from the stays though. At that point on the deck I would guess that the deck is at least 1.5 to 2 inches as well.

I checked with Catalina this morning (Kent) and there is nothing that would preclude you from removing the collar from the deck of the boat with the mast up. the only thing that he suggested was to release the tension from the deck tie down that connects the mast to the deck.... fwiw
