In need of wise advise from this group of "been there done thats".
The clear, smoked acrylic plastic on my starboard small hatch (between head door and TV compartment) on my 1998 MK2 36 has shattered. I'm told its due to the weakening of the plastic that has happened over time from UV, deck detergents, etc. combined with the corrosion of the hinge. Over the years it has become harder to open and close the hatch and the corrosion stiffened the hinge to the point it was stronger than the weakened plastic and it broke it.
I'm told by Select Plastics in CT that I have to remove the rivets that hold the hinge to the frame with a drill. They will replace the plastic, hinge, gasket etc. and then I have to rivet it back on the hatch frame with Rivets they provide. I have never riveted something.
Anyone have experience with this problem and can provide advice? How to do? Did it work? Where do I get a rivet gun? Etc?

you can replace just the plastic yourself; not a big deal. There are several recent threads on the forum recently, to a search and see what you can find. I have replaced four of the six lenses with plastic ordered from Select Plastics; I have the plastic cut for the rest, but am waiting for cooler weather.
If you can remove the pieces from the broken hatch and make a pattern, you can either order a slightly larger piece from Select Plastics and cut it out yourself with a band saw or jigsaw, or send the pattern to them and they can supply the cut lens.

But how about the defective hinge?

I have Lewmar port lights/windows on my MKI and have just started replacing the crazed lens's. If you have the Lewmar windows replacing the lens's with stock plastic can present problems. My neighbor Chris tried this and the leaked due to the fact that Lewmar lens's are a metric thickness. A stock US bulk plastic will be thinner and will require shimming to make the lens sit firm against the seal. The replacement lens only cost $35 dollars and just requires removing the two attach screws and nuts and reinstalling the new lens, a ten minute job. I think the price makes it worth purchasing the OEM lens as opposed to cutting shapeing and shimming the bulk plastic lens.
If you do not have Lemar units in your MKII I will sit down and shut up.

Just to be sure we're on the same page, you're speaking of he small, basically square hatch in the deck, not the port light, correct?
You're boat is just about the same vintage as mine, so I'm thinking it would have the same model hatches as mine does. On mine, the hinge itself does not support the plastic (actually cast acrylic), it supports just the aluminum frame. The hatch is held open by a separate, hinged plastic assembly that is adjustable with an allen wrench; it's called a 'Friction Lever' on this webpage http://www.lewmar.com/product-listing.asp?action=search&type=10. It is attached to the frame by rivets on one side, and attaches to the hatch plastic via a hinged plastic fitting with 2 screws. You can remove the 2 screws and the hatch will just flop open all the way in either direction.
Select plastic has all of those hinge parts too, btw.
So when I replaced the lenses on my hatches, I removed the latches and friction levers, cut the lens free with a sheetrock knife and replaced the lens with the hatch in place. When I called Select Plastics, they told me they also offer a service to replace the lens for you, but you do indeed have to remove the hatch lid and send it to them. I didn't go that route, so don't know how to disassemble the hinge.

Gary,
I did misunderstand, I was in fact speaking of the portlight windows not the hatch.
Catalina Yachts was running an overstock special on the small overhead hatches they use on the newer boats in the cieling of the head compartments. Not sure if it is the same size as the one you need but as I recall the price was very reasonable.

Thanks for input. For some reason the friction support mentioned has corroded inside and is very stiff.

I think you should be able to disassemble it by loosening the adjusters on both sides until they come apart. I found out the hard way that spraying WD40 on the friction levers on the forward hatch was a bad idea; it wouldn't stay open no matter how much I tightened them;)
