This thread is directed to people who did not buy a new boat.
I'm just about to close a deal on purchasing a used boat.
It has a cool name, but not sure I want to keep it.
I'm not sure how important it is to me to give it my own name.
It looks like it has stickers on the side that spell the name, but it doesn't look tacky. Boat is a 2004, and I wonder how it would look to pull the stickers off.
I've heard it is bad luck to rename a boat, but there is some sort of ritual you can perform to ward away the evil spirits.
Boat is documented, and I believe it is free to change name now, but costs money to change name later.
I'm kind of inclined to keep same name.

When I bought my '91 MK I in 1999, it was named Irish Rover in bright green with matching large shamrock in bright green....on both sides. It was not for me, so I changed her name. No ceremony involved, I'm not superstitious.

With 9 boats since 1975,the only one that i ran up on a reef one night near Fiji was the one i did not change the name.You can pour a shot of rum for yourself and one for your newly named boat ..which you can toss into the sea.Make it Appletons Master Blenders Legacy if you can find it.

We have only ever had used boats and everyone of them has been renamed Delaroux. No ceremonies just get rid of the old decals and stick on the new. Shadows from the old decals will fade over time on white, not so much on coloured gel coat.
When we bought our C36 we did not like the name and we changed it. We used the procedures in John Vigor's document for the ceremony. It gave us a reason to have a dock party :D.
We used a citrus organic liquid to remove the old name and there was not a ghost image of the old name. The new vinyl name went on at the same location and it looks good.
We did the name change on the USCG documentation with no issues or problems.

My PO had named the boat after his mother and we hated the name not to mention that it had no significant meaning for us. We changed it. And got a good deal on the new name decals from the Boat US site. No problems, but we still might have a recristining party cause its a great excuse to invite all the other boat people over for a party.

Hell yes on both counts!
Now, I figure it’s all the more incumbent upon me to be extra vigilant when I go to sea.
King Neptune never forgets being slighted so I’m never going to give him a reason to come get me if I can help it.
Next time, I’ll just give the King his due and have a party while I’m at it.

Blair, I would have no compunction whatsoever in changing a name on a boat. We have done it on the past three boats we have owned. You had inquired about removing the previous name, in the past, I have used a hair dryer (out of the water i.e.) to remove the vinyl. It comes right off and then applied acetone to remove the remaining residue.

Ok, sounds great. I am going to see if I can change the name.
Hopefully I won't have any trouble removing the stickers and residue.
My concern is about the "shadows" that will probably be visible once I pull the stickers off. I have seen this on other boats, and it is very aesthetically unappealing. If there is going to be a trace of the other name on the boat, I would almost rather keep the existing name. Is there an inexpensive way for me to remove these shadows, or do I have to have the boat painted over in that area?

Blair, Oven Cleaner works well to get them off.
Don't sweat the shadows, they disappear. And only you will look for it anyway.
If you must, don't use combo cleaner/wax. All they do is push dirt around and sand it right into your gelcoat. Always use separate cleaners and wax. Collinite makes good products, Fleetwax is very good.
