We were going to move the thru-hull to the engine from the engine room to aft of the starboard water tank in the aft cabin where newer Catalinas have them so it is quicker and more convienent to get to so we fiber glassed the hole in the engine room. I may or may not do that now.
If I do, what advice can you give me to place it right?
And advice if I go ahead and place it back in the engine room?

Since I have had no replies on this question I still am unsure where I'm going to place my thru-hull for engine.
Does anyone have any pictures they can send me of their engine thru-hull that is located in the area just aft of the outer water tank in the aft cabin?

I dont have any pics because i havnt done this mod,but i wish i had...After clogging the sea strainer with fine weed and having no hi temp alarm,i almost cooked the motor a while ago..I wish the strainer was in some open visible area, not buried like now...instead,i have ordered a clamp on ,exhaust mixing elbow alarm which is the earliest indicator of no-flow from the impellor...plus its easy to install

My tru hull is right where Catalina put it in my 1994, just aft of the engine under the berth cushion. I have a rule of checking the strainer every morning before engine start, just like checking the oil. That area was difficult to access due to the bulky aft cabin mattress, when I bought the boat. But I fixed that problem by taking the mattress to my local upholstery shop and had them cut out and re-sew the section that just fits the access panel to the space over the thru-hull, (and the fuel/water separator, and the transmission fluid check/fill hole and other stuff that needs to be tended to on a regular basis)
I had them add little pull tabs to the pull out mattress section. Its now a piece of cake to access this vital area. Moving the thru-hull would seem a lot harder, much more expensive and of no real advantage.

Since I'll be replacing the aft cabin cushions with a rug and will have it cut in sections I might as well put the engine thru-hull back where it was. I already fiberglassed it over so will need to recut the hole.
Any advice as to which hole cutting tool works best?

I use a good quality hole saw that mounts on a mandrel and has a drill bit in it to center it. You can drill a starting pilot hole from inside and then use the hole saw to drill in from outside which will give a smooth hole on the gel side, you might get some tearing on the inside with this cutting tool depending on what you are cutting. You can buy them at any hardware store. These get very hot when drilling glass but I've never had a problem using one. Smaller holes you could use a Speedbore bit.
