Here We Go Again

Friday afternoon we are delivering the boat 35 miles north to West Palm. We will be racing some distance races Saturday and Sunday in the Castaways Cup Regatta which is put on by the Castaways Sailing Club. There are 21 boats registered. Since our 155 is shaped kind of like a pillow case, I'm glad the forcast is for light air(see previous thread about south Florida forcasting)Which means I may get to use our almost new 140. I will post my post race thoughts Monday.

Well the forecast was correct, it was one big driftfest. Saturday's race started with zero wind and one knot of current pushing the fleet towards the start line. The race was 8 miles north with the current, round 1 mark and 8 miles back. Ten minutes after our start the wind filled in from the northeast at a whopping 5 knots. Not good for us, as our headsail really limits our performance. Halfway down the first leg the wind starts coming back behind the beam, so we pop the kite. By the time we get to the mark the wind is behind us so when we round the mark to go back, you guessed it, we are closehauled again. So we finish pretty far back in the fleet. Sunday was more of the same except less wind and more current around a triangle course. Three boats ended up dropping out. We rounded the leward mark and we drifted another two miles past it even thou the bow was pointed the other way. So no trophies, but a hell of a good time with other sailors.
In two weeks its the Columbus Day regatta in Miami.

Carl,

Best of luck at the Columbus Day Race. Of course the most important thing for you and all Catalina 36s is to have enough wind to make the round bottom lady to move. The good thing about Biscayne Bay is the smooth water, which always helps the Catalina 36s.

Take plenty of photos and post some.

What Catagory will you enter in the Columbus Regatta? What will be your handicap for this race? Is Black Magic a Tall Mast, Wing Keel, fixed prop?

Thanks for sharing those pics, Carl. Looks like everyone was enjoying themselves.

I miss seeing that shade of water, too. Here on the west coast of FL, our inland waterways are various shades of brown from all the mangrove root tannins.

Carl,

I hope you will share the same number of pictures from the CDR. I always love to see sailboats photos but the crew and "spectators" from the CDR are not no other regatta.
