LW Fiberglass Propane Tanks

Hi all, I just ordered and received a new LW propane tank from U-Haul to be used on Wild Wind, a Mk 1 C36. It is a 10 # tank, which I assumed would fit in my propane locker. Apparently, my boat uses a smaller (5#?) tank. Does Catalina (or another company) sell sealed lockers for a 10# propane tank?

I ordered this after reading lots of discussion on the C36IA blog on my iphone. The people talking must have Mk IIs.

One other question is, can propane bottles be used lying on their sides? I see forklifts using fuel tanks like this, but those might be designed for horizontal use.

Any info would be appreciated, as the see-through larger tank will be great for keeping track of my fuel level.

Thanks,

I am not an authority on this, but I doubt that our LP tanks are safe to use on their sides. What travels down the tubing is the gas that accumulates above the liquid surface. If you got liquid in the gas tubing, that would not be good.

There are special cylinders designed to be horizontal, but their plumbing is different, too.

Duane, I did find that info after posting. You are correct, our propane bottles are meant to be used standing upright.

Has anybody either modified their existing propane lockers to accomodate the 10# cylinders or built a new one from scratch? My Mk 1 has a small locker for the 4.25# propane bottle. I would like to use the 10# if it does not call for a lot more $ to be thrown at it.

Any ideas and/or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bill

Hi all, please disregard the earlier post. I sent the 10 pounder back. Why go to a lot of trouble when my two 4.25 # bottles have been working fine?:D

Thanks anyway, Bill
