Removing Decals & Striping Made Easy

Y'all,
Reviewing the various threads, I noticed folks have been finding it difficult to remove vinyl decals and striping from their hulls again.
Unfortunately, my postings on the old website are long gone with the wind, including the easist, fastest, and safest way to remove the vinyl and its sticky undersides.
Here's a tool that does the job:

It works great with a cordless drill and removes the vinyl in minutes without any damage to the hull. I've even used a similar eraser wheel to take the pinstriping off our old Chevy Blazer (RIP) years ago after it was partially removed by an over-zealous car washer!
These rubber wheels WORK! I've stripped 3 boats to date and swear by them.
And $15 a pop won't break the bank for the hours and hours saved.

First of all, I was surprised that the old website is no longer accessible. I went to the link to the old site under Community, and it appears to be no longer available. Darn. That was a very, very useful body of information. I am wondering (recognizing this is not the topic of this thread) if that is a permanent situation, in which case the reference under Community should be revised.

As to the stripe removal issue, I've had good luck using a hair dryer, and carefully peeling away the striping.

Chooch,

Nice tip on the stripe stripper, the price is right and this is one stripper that even Tiger Woods wife would not object to him bringing home.

As for our old site, I agree I miss it as it was my first link to this group. There were a lot of good posts there and some portions of the forums that did not make the move that some like myself had put a lot into. I know our new site took a lot of work to set up and took many months, it is to bad that the old forums could not have been incorporated into our new site. Some of the old Lies and Sea Stories my be lost for good as it is often hard to tell the same lie twice.

Loss of the postings on the old site was one of my grumblings.:mad:
However, as an old software engineer, I realize that migrating all of the threads with their links an re-links would have been an impossible task. Hopefully this forum system is built on a relational database that has some portability if we change hosts in the future.
Now, it looks like Alex has done a super job building the new site and finally getting the forums to work. :) I absolutely hated the major domo email setup we were using before my whole home network disintegrated in 2007.
Sorry I dropped off the face of the earth back then. Trusting the Aussie in-laws' email attachments turned into a nightmare as the worm turned. We don't know what got us - took out all the PCs on the home network and the back-up drives before we knew we had a problem. McAfee didn't catch it! Now, I run CA, PCTools, and System Mechanic on the home systems with backups on each.
Sure glad I didn't share that worm with y'all:D!
Congrats again on picking up the fallen banner!

Well now that would have saved a lot of wear and tear on my fingernails as "Kokomo" was rechristened as "Palmetto Moon". Even worse is I'm a pilot and airplane owner, so Aircraft Spruce is a supplier I'm well familiar with.

Lastly, regarding "strippers" I tell my friends that "go fast" boats are about strippers and scotch and sailboats are about strypeze and scotchbrite. :D

btw, you can add that last part to famous and soon to be famous thread if you like.

Great info, just ordered the stripper wheel from Spruce Aircraft's Canadian store in Brantford. We have to take off and replace all the stripes (cracked and crazed) and two huge name graphics so this is going to be, well, priceless!

Cooch,

What is your secret to putting on the new stripes in a straight line? Suggested on other recent threads are measuring down from the rub rail and making numerous marks to line the new stripes on. I am hoping to do this in the Spring.

This is the major reason why I haven't replaced mine yet, I'm about as artistic as a doorknob. I'm thinking of having a sign person who works with vinyl lettering put on my stripes. I just can't see me getting a straight line over a span of 36'. I guess a man has to know his limitations.:rolleyes:

Richard,

The secret to having perfect stripes is to find a good contractor and pay him handsomely! Tara's gold striping was part of her overhaul. The lettering was applied by me courtesy of speedysigns.com.

Richard,
I was told another secret to straight lines is to apply the tape in long sections, not 1" at a time. Make tiny reference marks every 6-12", but then pull out a couple of feet and apply it.
