NAVPOD Engine Instrument Panel EP162 for older C-36's

Hi there,

Just wanted to first point out to all that Navpod is having a clearance on their EP162 gauge panels, for a blowout price of 99$. I ordered one for my father for a birthday present, and I'm wondering if anyone here has converted their panel over to one of these.

Here's the link to the item.

I purchased it because I think it will be MUCH easier to see the instruments while underway, rather than where they currently are (in port side locker)

If you have changed your panel out with one of these, any pointers for the install? Did you have to extend any wires?

Where did you get the stainless leg that helps to support the pod?

Thanks in advance

Boy, I would love to upgrade to one of these.

I wonder if it will work on a 1985 C36?

I'll probably go by the boat tomorrow morning, or night to check...

As ours is an 1985, I'll let you know!

This is a much better location for the instruments but, a note of caution if you have a wheel driven autopilot such as the the Raymarine unit there may be an interference issue.

I believe that someone posted a note about this here on our site.

Howdy,
I purchase one of the units and it is pretty straight forward to do, the i ran the wiring from the engine to the panel behind the aft bulkhead to a new opening in the the cockpit floor. i had previously upgraded the engine panel so i had about 16 feet of wiring to use and that was more than enough. I would caution that the tubing from the cockpit floor to the engine panel is not all that easy to acquire and in fact i had to make my own. i had some left over 1" ss tubing that i was able to bend in a S shaped curve with a conduit bender but it didn't look as good as what is on the newer boats i have seen it on. the only way that the tubing can be bent without kinking is with a high price bender that i didn't have access to and that i was not able to locate anywhere within the area that i live. i did find that railmakers would fabricate a tube that would work but they wanted around 150 dollars for the tubing. the other thing that you need to be aware of is that when you move the instruments to the panel you will need to rewire some of the stuff since the original wiring in the panel won't quite reach.
good sailing

Mike:

Sounds interesting, do you have any pictures of your install or your boat?

Also, was it 100% necessary to put a bend in the stainless piping? Navpod's website shows a straight pipe leading down.

How did you mount the Navpod to the binnacle?

Would it be possible to run the wires down through the pedestal guard?

Thanks for any and all help!

Eric,
Is is necessary to ben the stainless piping? well unless you are willing to drill through the base of the pedestal it has to be bent to clear the base.

the Navpod is mounted using the same screw that is used to hold the cabling in place, although you do have to get a little bit longer bolt. I would also add that although i didn't do so it might be a good idea to have two mounting bolts one at the top and one at the bottom. when i checked (i think with catalina) they said that it was held in place with only one bolt so that's what i did. it would be more securre with two.

could you run the wires through the pedestal guard? i suppose so but that would involve making a rather large hole in the pedestal itself wouldn't it? plus i don't know if you looked and the amount of space within the pedestal itself but there is not a lot of free space there and i would be concerned with chafing the wiring when the wheel was turned

if i go to the boat this weekend i'll post some pics of the navpod when i get back, assuming i can figger out how.
regards,
Mike

You're not located in the SF Bay area are you?

If you get your pictures and can't figure out how to post them, send them to my email at:

btw, the last shot was NOT a picture of the navpod, just a really nice evening on lake texoma, the weather was perfect, highs in the upper 80's and the lows in the 60's which is not usual for the month of August in north texas.

We also took advantage of the $99.00 deal and purchased one of the new style engine instrument pods. At the same time I also upgrades the engine wiring with the kit from Seaward. As you can see by Mike's pictures from CiscoCat, the stock wheel comes very close to the pod. I purchased one of the overstock special Catalina 36" diameter Lewmar folding wheels from Defender and this provided a more comfortable clearance to the pod.

Send it our way please. It read 122 in the marina parking lot today when I left the lake for San Antonio. This has been a brutal summer.
