Westerbeke/Universal 35 HP 2000 Model

Have been loosing 1/3 gallon of coolant every 2 hrs of motoring.
No evidence of leakage or drip.It appears more like evaporation.
Eng temp stays below 180 degrees.
1060 engine hours and zink is new.
No evidence of fresh water pump impairment.

Should I start dissassembling/replacing the heat exchanger?
Other thoughts?

Thank you

Hi Jerry:

I would go for the heat exchanger. It is pretty easy to change the end gaskets and o-ring. Even if you have an internal leak in one of the heat exchanger tubes, it is cheaper than the other cause for loss of coolant...the head gasket! If you remove the end caps on the heat exchanger and don't find any obvious source of a leak from them, the heat exchanger itself can be checked by most reputable radiator repair shops. Good luck

I would agree that it is probably the heat exchanger, although your boat sounds a little young for a corrosion problem. It may have been a manufacturing defect.

I would start by adding some of the radiator leak stop goop you find in the automotive parts store. If it is a small pin-hole, then the leak stop goop will probably fix your problem for $2.99 If it still leaks after that, then it is time to have it repaired at a radiator shop.

The leak stop goop worked for me for one season, we'll see how it holds up in season two.

Owners manual for Westerbeke wants the HE pressure cleaned annualy. This has not been done.

Your idea is worth a try.

Thank you

Jerry,

I'm still trying to learn a few things. What lead to your discovery
that you were losing coolant.
