Leaking Hatches

My 1999 C36, has notoriously leaking hatches. I have tried to reseal some, but it seems unless I use two or three tubes of boat life per hatch they still leak. I will do it if that is what it takes.

Also, some of my ports drip when it rains. It seems to leak through the frame.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Tom,

Not sure on the hatches...

I ran into the portlight issue and found a few things. Depending on your type of portlights (old vs new standard) you can check the following...

On my 1996 MKII I have the "Old Standard" and they have two "expansion" type seals on the exterior sides. These may need to be removed and resealed. On this type of portlight, this is a common problem. You should not need to remove the portlight for this fix. I found a PDF that I will send in to post on the site reference materials.

If that is not it, I have used (thanks to another owner) weather-strip material to reseal the entire portlight. The hardest part of this task was cleaning off all the old sealant prior to rebedding. I used material made by Frostbite found at Home Depot (in the Window Department) for about $7 for 18ft of material. It is a 9mm with an adhesive back that is very easy to work with and you cut to size. I ran this around the interior edge of the external frame and then re-attached the portlight. I have not had any problems using this material and it is rated for 10 years. The plus side is that if I did need to make an adjustment, or reseal years from now, the portlight would be easier to remove, clean, and replace than if I used traditional sealant. I did this back in Feb of 2008 on 3 portlights (the 4th was a few weeks ago) and have not had any problems since. I found the original grey sealant tape from the factory wasn't that great on my boat.

I would first try re-sealing the expansion joints before pulling out the portlight.

Just my thougths.

I posted the doc under the main website. From the main page, click on "Articles" - then "Maintenance" - then "Portlight Joint Replacement."
